Name/IP ping problem - help

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Slightly related to my previous question, but I have a laptop that can ping

the IP address of a Windows 2003 server, but it cannot ping the server's

name. How do I fix this?

Thanks in advance,

A.

Sounds like DNS issue. Any errors if using nslookup command? Or check this troubleshooting.

RE: Name/IP ping problem - help

The laptop is unable to look up the IP address when given the server name.

There are two ways the laptop can do this.

1. use the host file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.txt

2. use a DNS server

both of these technologies contain a table, with a computer name and

corresponding IP address

I would suggest you ensure the laptop has a DNS server configured in the

TCPIP properties on your network card, and that the server has connectivity,

as a first step.
