Guest Roger Van Loon Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I am using Win XP Professional. After changing to a new monitor screen, I had to reset the resolution (now1280 x 1024 pixels). Afterwards, the text size, for me, was too small to read, so I made adaptations in Win XP (right-clicking on the desktop - properties - appearance - advanced - message box (etc) - font size) (DPI set to 120). Still, I can't get it right. My main problem is with the size of the text in my mail program (Outlook Express 6) (where I also made adaptations, but I think the solution must lie in the settings of Win XP.) The text size in the mail windows is OK, but the text in some boxes remains small, whatever I do. For example - when I want to forward a message, the text in the box 'select recipients' is way too small (practically unreadable for me). What am I doing wrong? TIA Roger.
Guest Unknown Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Re: problems with text size Did you click on 'view' in Outlook express, select 'text size' and set to largest? Only other item that come to mind is decreasing monitor resolution. Guest Paul Randall Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Re: problems with text size Is your new screen a wide screen and your old one a non-wide screen? What was your old resolution setting? What is the native resolution of your new screen? How high (in inches or cm) was the viewable area of your old screen? How high is the viewable area of your new screen? -Paul Randall "Roger Van Loon" <roger.van.loon@telenet.be> wrote in message news:OT$VbKq%23HHA.5980@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... >I am using Win XP Professional. > After changing to a new monitor screen, I had to reset the resolution > (now1280 x 1024 pixels). Guest Nightowl Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Re: problems with text size Hi Roger You might want to try changing resolution to 1024 x 768 and see if that's better for you. Also, do you have ClearType enabled? (Right-click on desktop, choose Properties, Appearance tab, Effects button). For me it makes a big difference. You can tweak the ClearType setting to your preference using Microsoft's ClearType Tuner, online version here: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/Step1.aspx or downloadable Control Panel applet here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx I also like the free ClearTweak program: http://www.ioisland.com/cleartweak/ Hope this helps. -- Nightowl Roger Van Loon <roger.van.loon@telenet.be> wrote on Wed, 19 Sep 2007: >I am using Win XP Professional. >After changing to a new monitor screen, I had to reset the resolution >(now1280 x 1024 pixels). Guest Roger Van Loon Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Re: problems with text size Hi Paul Both are non-wide screens Old one was 40 cm / 15 inch diagonal, new one 48 cm / 18 inch diagonal Old resolution was 800x600 pixels, new is 1280x1024 pix (as advised with the screen). But, it now just seems to me that in some window boxes (eg, as said, in the box 'select recipients', see original message) size cannot be changed except by changing the resolution (as suggested by Nightowl). Is this correct? Guest Paul Randall Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 Re: problems with text size The size of each pixel on the larger screen is less than the size on the smaller screen. The math is kind of difficult because the ratio of width to height is not the same on the two screens (4:3 and 5:4). I think you need to ensure you have the latest driver for your video card and monitor, so that you will have more choices of display resolutions that have a 5:4 width to height ratio. Something like 1024 by 800 might give you about the same size characters as you had on the old screen. If the new screen is LCD type or other type with a fixed number of pixels horizontally and vertically, then any other display resolution you choose will be somewhat fuzzy. I've never been happy with changing resolution or default font size for problems like this. -Paul Randall "Roger Van Loon" <roger.van.loon@telenet.be> wrote in message news:ev7GWf7%23HHA.1208@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > Hi Paul > Both are non-wide screens > Old one was 40 cm / 15 inch diagonal, new one 48 cm / 18 inch diagonal > Old resolution was 800x600 pixels, new is 1280x1024 pix (as advised with > the screen). > But, it now just seems to me that in some window boxes (eg, as said, in > the box 'select recipients', see original message) size cannot be changed > except by changing the resolution (as suggested by Nightowl). > Is this correct? > Roger > > > Paul Randall wrote: >> Is your new screen a wide screen and your old one a non-wide screen? >> What was your old resolution setting? >> What is the native resolution of your new screen? >> How high (in inches or cm) was the viewable area of your old screen? >> How high is the viewable area of your new screen? >> >> -Paul Randall >> >> "Roger Van Loon" <roger.van.loon@telenet.be> wrote in message >> news:OT$VbKq%23HHA.5980@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... >> >>> I am using Win XP Professional. >>> After changing to a new monitor screen, I had to reset the resolution >>> (now1280 x 1024 pixels). I had that problem when I went from a 17' CRT to a 19" LED. Right click desktop Properties Appearance Advanced You can click on the picture for some settings and use the dropdown for others. Some of the settings aren't apparent and changes text in program boxes you refer to. It's a bit of a pain to get it right, but it worked great for me.
