system restore

Hello,

I read somewhere that System restore should not be used to go back to far.

If so, how far back is it safe to go.

Reason for asking is my Epson Printer has stopped working. Been to Eson

help and they have run out of ideas. They suggest trying printer out on

another PC. I do not know of anyone who wants to possibly risk inheriting a

copy of my problems.

Thought I'd keep going back until (hopefully) it started working.

Any help greatfully appeciated.

Regards

When is the last time you remember it working properly? Use SR to go

back just prior to that.

I would try the printer on another machine, like Epson recommended

(installing the proper drivers and everything). If it works properly

there, you know it's your machine, and can then uninstall it from the

other test machine. Since the test machine isn't going to use the

printer any further than for the test, it won't inherit your problem.

You can go back as far as System Restore has restore points. This

simply means that you will lose any updates you have done since

(but not your data!). And anyway, you can always undo a restoration

if you wish.

There's no absolute number of days. The problem is that the farther

back you go, the more likely it is that you will get the restored

registry out of synch with other unrestored files on the drive.

Personally I think going back more than a week or two is risky. It's

for that reason I recommend lowering the default allocation of 12% of

you drive (which is far too much for almost everyone) to whatever

amount gives you a dozen or so restore points. All you need for that

is 1-2GB at the most.

What does "stopped working: mean? Exactly what are the symptoms? If

you get an error message, please quote it verbatim.

Have you considered the possibility that the printer has physically

failed, and needs repair or replacement?

Hi Ras,

Here's one good reason.

Any application installed after the restore point you are reverting to may

not function. What happens is, System Restore only removes monitored files

for the installed applications and the rest are left behind. This can cause

the application not to function. And in some cases, can also cause the

uninstall and reinstall process of the partially removed application to

fail. It is recommended to uninstall any applications that was installed

after the restore point you will be restoring to.

Just revert back to a date prior to the problem emerging. System Restore is

intended as a way to bail out of trouble and, if used, it should be used as

soon as you see a need for it. I don't use SR as the first means of fixing a

problem but I certainly use it when other avenues fail.

Re: system restore

First, attack the problem from the printer side. Have you reinstalled the

printer driver? What indication do you get from the printer? What is meant

by 'my printer stopped working'?

As far as you want to go and have restore points for. The only issue is

that you might "de install" some programs you installed AFTER that point in

time and have to put them back by reinstalling, but that's about all.

You won't pass on your problems by connecting your printer to another

computer. It'll either work or be the same; that's all. You'll also have

to install the drivers for it, of course.

Have you tried reinstalling your drivers on your machine? How about

removing and reinstalling the printer via Device Manager?

RE: system restore

Thank you all for your advice. I shall try the printer on another PC. If I am

successful and the printer works then the problem will be with my PC. Then I

shall come back and ask another lot of questions.

Until then Thanks again for the help.

RE: system restore

Hello again.

I have recently managed to connect my printer to anothe computer

using Vista.

The printer works fine on that laptop.

I am now left with the assumption that my PC is at fault.

I would appreciate any further help to advise me what the next step

should be.

Thank you
