Why? Bung the CD in the drive and it'll do that for you.

Not enough information to get focused help. Please see this link for

help in making a good newsgroup post:

http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

Here is a link that explains how to do a Repair Install:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If you are booting correctly with the XP CD and following the

instructions at the above link and the XP installation routine doesn't

find a Windows installation, either:

1. You have a SATA drive and in the very early stage of the install

(Repair or Clean) you need to press F6 to supply the drivers for your

SATA drive controller; or

2. The current Windows installation is not repairable. Pull your data

off (if you didn't already back it up) by booting with a rescue CD such

as Knoppix or a Bart's PE and saving the data to an external hard drive.

Then do a Clean Install of Windows.

http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Clean Install How-To

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Reinstalling_Windows -

What you will need on-hand

If you provide more details about your computer, what caused you to want

to do a Repair Install, etc. per the guidelines in the very first link I

gave you, then we may be able to give you more specific help.

I'm sorry Loretta, but this doesn't make sense. You don't use the

Recovery Console to do a Repair Install. Read the information at the

link I gave you to Michael Stevens' site for how to do a Repair Install.

One of the most common reasons for a Windows machine to lose Internet

connectivity is virus/malware infection. Was the computer clean? If you

think it was, what programs (including versions) did you use to

determine this?

Since you have done a parallel install and presumably things are still

not working the way you want, pull your data off and do a clean install.

Otherwise, please tell us what your end goal is.

Re: Need a file

Hi Peter,

Correct.

I had started a repair install to fix issues I was having with Windows.

Windows was running but Iexplorer could not access the internet.

The original repair install failed. So I tried again but the Install cannot

see the original Windows install. So I tried the repair console(recovery

console?)which does see the Windows directory, but does not ask for the

password.

Since then I have done a complete parallel install. The files look ok on the

original Windows, but obviously something is wrong. If I try to let the

original repair install run it crashes, putting up a blue screen the

disappears before I can read it. Windows was updated to SP2 and several

other updates were done. This in on a Toshiba laptop, with XP pro. I used my

CD from my laptop as the Toshiba did not have a Windows XP CD.

My CD has SP 2 already on it. There could be a driver conflict but I cannot

get into the Original system to uninstall the drivers. The parallel install

went as expected and runs well.

Thanks

Re: Need a file

Hi Loretta

If the parallel installation works fine and the start up is normal why not

just delete the "old" non workin XP installation???

There is a little confusion here as to what you actually installed from..you

said the problem was on a Toshiba laptop and you used your latop CD as the

Toshiba did have have XP CD....So what type of XP CD did you use?? from what

machine ??to install onto the Toshiba.Using a OEM version of another

manufacturers XP would not work ..that might be your repair installation

problem. As an example if you used a DELL OEM to repair it might work

partially but non of the drivers would match the Toshiba machine..

Even the Toshiba should have some manner of "recovery" wether it be by means

of CD or a Recovery Partition on the HD. Look at the manual that came with

the machine it should explain how to access the partition and how to use

it.The bad part is that usually this type of recovery sets the machine back

to the state it was when 1st purchased...all of your since then installed

updates...programs....work/data files would be deleted. If you are looking to

to do this just to clean up the present mess then be sure you have your

Program CD,s and copy all of your personal files to a CD/DVD

The "Repair" install is normally done by means of pretending to do a full

install...dont push that 1st R...go tru the steps and watch for that repair

message.

The "recovery console" is accessed by mean of the 1st R

Re: Need a file

The orginal Windows has a lot of business software on it.

I used the OEM CD Windows XP Pro from my MSI notebook, because the Toshiba

did not come with an XP CD of its Own. The restore set that came with the

computer only does a destructive restore. I could try a different CD but I

still have the problem that the Repair Instal does not recognize that there

is an original install. There must be file/s that I could copy that would

alow the repair to see "Windows" as well as the new install "WinXP".

Re: Need a file

When I said delete the original non working XP I meant just delete the XP

directory.

I am assuming that the installation that does work sees all of those

"business software" programs and Activated just fine so you do not find

yourself unable to start the OS in 30 days time.

The other thing you could try is borrow someones Retail Version OEM XP and

try the repair install from that...using the product key that is on the

Toshiba.

With the 2 XP installations How are they listed under the C

drive...........C:\windows and C:\winndows2 or what??

By using the "recovery Console" you might be able to copy the registry files

from the working installation to the non working installation

here is an example....but you need to know where both OS are installed

1. Start Recovery Console.

2. At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you

type each line:

del c:\windows\system32\config\sam

del c:\windows\system32\config\security

del c:\windows\system32\config\software

del c:\windows\system32\config\default

del c:\windows\system32\config\system

copy c:\windows\tmp\software c:\windows\system32\config\software

copy c:\windows\tmp\system c:\windows\system32\config\system

copy c:\windows\tmp\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam

copy c:\windows\tmp\security c:\windows\system32\config\security

copy c:\windows\tmp\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

BUT....you NEED to know the directories of each installation and sub the

appropriate path into the above procedure

Hi Peter.

Actually to be able to try again to repair the Windows all I needed was to

copy the system save. If that resolves the other issues we will find out.

Thanks again.

Re: Need a file

That can be caused by a few hardware inconsistancies.....like memory...video

or HD.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/prork/prhd_exe_duol.mspx?mfr=true

There are a few things to try..lets start with the easy one.........Recovery

Console....run chkdsk /f /r

if that works ..........see if the repair works

Re: Need a file

Hi Peter,

I copied over all of the items you had on your list.

Now I get a password error and I also no longer can get into the original

windows in the recovery console because it wants a password.

Any other ideas. So far you have been the most helpful.

Re: Need a file

If you've never setup a password just press enter

if you have a password...you'll need to use the administrator password.....

Did you copy from new installation directory to old installation

directory???......therefore it would need the "new" password"

So are you tech support for Anderson Computer or is this your own personal

system??

Re: Need a file

Can you get into the new installation.........directly

Can you still Access the old with Recovery Console..........does the Console

now see the 2 installations??

If the registry was "broken" on the old and you just copied the old registry

to the new then new should now be broken as well.If you can access the new

then maybe it was not a registry problem and we need to rethink this. When

you installed the new did it not pick up all of your programs and make

registry entries and shortcuts for them on the desktop???

Re: Need a file

Hi Peter,

I can get into the new installation no problem. I tried to access the

programs but it cannot find the dll files. I do not know if that is the only

problem. The new install does not pick up the programs. A repair install

does.

Cannot get into the old install because of the password problem in the

Recovery console. And yes it does show both installations.

If I had thought of the System32 config folder in the first place I probably

would not have these problems now.

Thanks

Loretta
