Guest John Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 I have seen many complaints (and much ranting) about why SP2 sucks royally. Guys, I see your point, but, I thought I'd better put a "how to" post on the USENET community, just in case someone else has trouble. ********************** 1 > Get the service pack. Download it at: http://www.windowsupdate.com OR http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx Save it to a location such as the desktop or my documents. 2 > Turn off or disable your antivirus software. On AVG Free you can do this by right clicking on the AVG Free Edition icon on the taskbar, and click on "Quit AVG Control Center". I currently do not have instructions for how to quit Norton Internet Security. 3 > Save and close any open work. The installation of Service Pack 2 will not work while system files are in use. 4 > Ensure that you have the latest version of Windows Installer. Redistributable here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=da Set it up and restart your computer if required. 5 > Launch SP2 installation. Now, before you do this, make sure you have about 1 or 2 hours. Or just launch it, get it running, and take a walk outside, or in other cases, you can put your computer on AC Power and go to sleep! 6 > Reboot. Make sure your computer is stable, and everything is working. 7 > Enjoy! That is, enjoy the programs such as IE7, that did not have compatibility for SP1. *********** Now, if anyone has a suggestion or comment, just reply and tell me. So, I hope this can help with SP2 installation. Good Luck! John. -- The light at the end of the tunnel, is the sign of success.
Guest hoffmt28 Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 RE: HOWTO: Install XP SP2, without the anger. I just got an older but basically unused computer that requires me to get Service Pack 2 to basically download anything. When I did this, it slowed my computer down slow bad it was barely navigable. Any thoughts? I had to do a system restore prior to the download to alleviate the slowness. Is this common? Is there something else that I could do? Guest John Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 RE: HOWTO: Install XP SP2, without the anger. Apart from the fact the Windows XP *will* slow you down a bit, I don't see any reason why XP Service Pack 2 is different to Service Pack 1 in terms of speed. Have you tried a defrag? Click on Start, All Programs, point to accessories, point to System Tools and click on Disk Defragmenter. Click on defragment. Defragmenting your system should speed it up. Guest John Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Re: HOWTO: Install XP SP2, without the anger. AumHa. The first website that comes up when I post something. Not that I am complaining. But yes, maybe I should not have bothered, not much information on my post like the website has. -- The light at the end of the tunnel, is the sign of success.
