Minor Threatfire problem.

It may be a common problem or may not , however to describe as best I can, after boot up has finished and providing I want the machine on line, I use a DSL broadband connection. Once connected, after a few minutes which can be as long as ten minutes or more, everything freezes, for about two or three minutes, the only thing that works is the mouse pointer (plus the hourglass). I know what is happening, because the next thing is everything returns to normal and then up pops the balloon to tell me "The latest updates have been installed in your threatfire". Obviously the updating process is hogging a lot of resources, is this common? I have had a look at PC Tools site but nothing helpful there. Any answers please any one?

It is only a minor issue, more an annoyance, but if it is a sign something is wrong elsewhere I would be glad to know.

 

In case there are known issues with other software, here is the security stuff I have.

Firewall, Comodo Firewall Pro

Avast anti-virus,

Malwarebytes,

SAS (superantispy---)

Spybot S&D (teatimer turned off)

Ad Aware

SpywareBlaster,

comodo BOClean,

last but not least Threatfire.

 

All the above are up to date with the latest versions.

To top all that, on another forum, a security and malware MRU graduate recomended not to run Threatfire alongside Avast as there is a suspicion there could be a conflict, but I have seen no other problems, and as yet there is only a suspicion of conflict, no proof as such.

Any views on that one folks?

What are your system specifications Nev in terms of CPU and memory size?

 

You can also get shut of AdAware and Spybot as they are not the tools they once were.

 

To be honest I can't see Threatfire helping you in any significant way but others may have different opinions.

 

I run the fully paid version of NOD 32's Security Suite and it does for me.

A screen shot of the system showing the main details, thanks for the reply Wolfy, I have already been thinking along the lines of dumping some, such as AdAware, and perhaps the Threatfire, as SpywareBlaster is doing more or less the same thing. I know some are saying Spybot isn't what it was, but loath to lose that as yet.

Stick with SAS and Malwarebytes and you won't go far wrong Nev.

 

You could do with getting XP SP3 also mate.

I did some searching on threatfire and was not impressed by any means. It seems to be more about marketing then having any real value. A lot more about marketing.

 

You have a good AV and firewall and you have XP (update XP). You also have SpywareBlaster which uses zero resources and is based on a data list.

 

Sure there might be a tiny bit more you can do but threatfire doesn't make my list.

 

I could say a lot more about it if I thought it worthwhile to bash it but instead I agree with wolfeymole. Just get rid of it.

OK as an update I have removed Threatfire, (cheeky beggars opened up a page in Firefox asking why I had got rid!!!) then also Ad-Aware has gone, as I said earlier, I am reluctant to dump Spybot S&D yet as it does have some useful features, excluding of course the annoying teatimer. Thanks all for your help in this and I shall see what the future brings. SP3 is as yet something to go for when I have more time to sit around while it downloads, then installs. Perhaps on the morrow.

It's more than just annoying, but rather prohibitive to a proper disinfection.

 

SD is old and deficient software that has been replaced by SAS and MB.
