office ultimate 2007 and media 2004 xp HELP!!

rec'd a doc in word 2003 format as a web based email attachment. Opened it

with my word 2007, no problem. Spent over 5 hours editing the doc with no

problems.

Husband sat down and hit "close" and answered "yes" when prompted if he

wanted to save the changes. Looked like there was no problem.

Can't locate the doc with changes ANYWHERE. Not in recent docs, word

history, searches thru hidden files, subfolder, temp internet files, etc.

Tested what hubby did and it definitely looks like the doc gets saved but

apparently to nowhere.

If I use the word 2007 to create a doc; it saves perfectly by closing with

the "close" route or "save as".

I open the original attachment doc, edit slightly and it saves fine when I

chose "save as" but if I chose "close" and answer yes to save changes, I

can't locate anything.

No warnings, no errors...looks like the changes are saved but I can't find

them anywhere.

Microsoft won't answer an email but I've heard they don't when their

products are fundamentally flawed.

I know how to recover thru DOS but know enough to be aware that I'll

probably only geta partial recovery at best and that's a waste since I have

the original unedited doc anyway.

When ever you open any email attachment either web or email client

like Outlook Express, unless you "Save As" to a specific name /

folder, the "attached" file is stored in the "Temporary Internet

Files." This is not a "flaw!" The Internet Explorer, or email

client, does not know what to do besides let you open the attachment.

If you want to retain the attachment, so as to modify it, you should

select the option to "Save" it before working on it.

Nope, the problem is that the user edited a temporary file, in a

temporary folder. Hence the continuous admonishments to NOT edit

attachments, but to do a Save As first. If you are lucky, and you

haven't re-opened the original attachment again, and overwritten the

edited and "saved" file in the temporary folder, you can still retrieve

it. Open a DIFFERENT attachment, and then do file Save As. The dialog

box will open in the temporary folder, now IF the file is still

there(didn't get overwritten and deleted) you may look at the path in

the "Save In" pull down so you may navigate to the location in Windows

Explorer, and rescue it. And please learn not to edit temporary files.

As for Microsoft replying to your e-mail and your ability to use common

software being a fatal flaw, well, what do you suppose they would say?
