Guest Chris Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 I just installed a new Dell Power Edge 2950 with Windows server 2003 Std. Everying is fine. The only problem I got now is that I can not shut down from Windows. When selecting "shutdown" it won't shut down. Instead, it reboots. I called Dell tech he has no idea. Is something wrong with my OS set up? Thanks.

Guest boe Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Re: can not shut down server, just reboot. I would have to guess there is something about the rack mount dell's that doesn't work natively with Wink2k3 X64 with the standard patches - not sure what yet - I'm sure dell will come out with a firmware update. I didn't test because I immediately apply patches but it probably works normally until you apply the patches for Windows - perhaps it is SP2, maybe some other post SP2 patch. Guest Dali Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Re: can not shut down server, just reboot. I'd start with the TOE key. Take it out and see if that helps. Do you have MS SNC pack installed? support.microsoft.com/kb/912222 You must have it if you have TOE installed. I still think it has something to do with the network. Guest Eric McMurtry Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 Re: can not shut down server, just reboot. I have had the same issue on the last two Dell servers I've purchased (PE 1950 and PE 2950). Both with fresh installs of Windows 2003 Standard. The servers would reboot instead of shut down. The issue are the Broadcom NIC's/drivers. Ultimately, I've disabled the onboard NIC cards and replaced with another NIC. But below is what I initially did to resolve the issue. I just wanted to post this in case anyone in the future runs into the same issue. I have a brand new PowerEdge 1950 server with Windows 2003 server with Service Pack 2 and all of the latest Microsoft updates. Server has all current drivers/BIOS/firmware. Problem: When I try to shutdown the system, the system re-boots. When I press the power button to shut down, the system restarts. Seeing that I was stumped, I reinstalled Windows 2003 server - and had the exact same problem. Answer: This server has dual gigabit Broadcom ethernet cards. Seeing that I was only going to be using one of the NIC cards, I disabled the other. Simply enabling the other NIC solved the problem.
Guest Eric McMurtry Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 Re: can not shut down server, just reboot. An added note.... On the problem with the server I'm working on today.... disabling the Broadcom NIC's in windows didn't work. I actually needed to go into BIOS and disable the onboard NIC's and now all is well again.
