R2 clarification

Hi,

I´ve been browsing the web for several hours reading about R2 and SP2 and

I´m just getting more confused.

I have several Windows Server 2003 Std with no SP and with SP1 and SP2 but

no R2. I have Software Assurance so I can take advantage of the R2 version.

Win2003 with SP1 can be upgraded to R2 but I got a test server with no

service pack which I tried to upgrade to R2 to test but I get a message

saying I need SP2?

So do I need to apply SP2 to my server and then install R2?

I also heard that if I install SP2 and when R2 I will not be able to

uninstall SP2?

If I apply SP2 and when R2 will the server be a Windows Server 2003 R2

version not saying anything about SP2?

I also get the impression that there is service packs for the R2 version?

I´m just extremly confused right now!

If someone has a great link or wants to explain it a bit it would be great.

Regards

Niklas

Re: R2 clarification

R2 is a feature update. You install R2 only on the servers you want to use

those updates featrues.

R2 is a two disk set. Depending on *when* you got the R2 set of disks, the

first disk will have either Win 2k3 SP1 or Win 2k3 SP 2. The second disk of

each is the R2 features. AFAIK when you install R2 you will not then be able

to uninstall existing Service packs. Not sure about service packs installed

after R2.

Say you have 5 servers in your domain. You have server in an office in

another state. You decide to replicate their data back to the corporate

office and back it up there. In this scenario you would install SP 2 on ALL

servers and R2 on only the server in the other office and the server at

corporate that make up the replication group so those two servers can take

advantage of the new and improved replication features that R2 provide.

Remember, best practice is to only install the services you need on any

given server. If a server does not need the new and improved features of R2,

don't install it.

If you add R2 to a server you will see it listed as Win 2k3 R2.

AFAIK there is no Service packs for R2.

Re: R2 clarification

Danny,

Do you have to buy the Windows Server 2003 R2 in order to get the R2, or is

there just a free or purchasable R2 add-on? I would like to be able to use

the File Screening that the R2 offers for my current 2003 install.

Thank you!

Re: R2 clarification

I can't answer that question. We have a volume license and I *think* this

was a benefit of the volume license, not totally sure though.

Re: R2 clarification

Hello,

you need to buy it if you don't have software insurance from Microsoft.

It's considered as a new version, like a Windows 2008
