How do I install a Print Server

I was wondering how I install a print server in Windows 2003? I have

installed it through the "Configure youe server" but I thought it used IIS,

but I haven't got this installed?

Hi Cyborg,

No need to install it. Basically when you set up and "share" a printer it

becomes available for people to use, and the spooler service handles the

printing. No IIS either,

Somebody on another forum said (quite clever) he managed to create a Visio

diagram of his office with printers located on it, users could then just

select the printer they want in the drawing and install it.

He said he got the links from the Print servers website?

There's no print server website. Why not ask him exactly what he did? I've

never heard of it. Sounds cool, if it's true, although I can't see why

anyone wouldn't just centrally deploy their network printers rather than

asking users to open Visio diagrams.

Re: How do I install a Print Server

I've just worked it out, install Internet printing, there is a connect

button for all printers listed, take the source from the connect buttom and

either email to the users or add to as a hyperlink to a Visio floor plan

saved as a web site, I'm going to publish it on our intranet. By deafult i

will install the printers by group policy, but remote users who come to our

office can you locate the printer either through AD or via the florr plan.

Also what spec should a print server be, I need to find details. We have

600 users, 40 printers. The server is a new Dell Intel 5130 2.0 GHZ, 2GB

ram, RAID 1 server.

Seems like an awful amount of work. Why not just label printers with

logical names so end users can figure out where they are, then print

to either the one nearest them, or to what somebody else asks?

We had hundreds of network printers and you could pretty much always

tell where they were by their name.

A printer names b1712-105-2P was located in building 1712, room 105,

was the second printer in a clockwise rotation from the main entrance

to the room, and the P indicated it was a printer.

This was for an enterprise that spanned an entire campus, and never

gave any users problems.
