Can I set my PC to turn on and off daily at certain time ?

Recommended Posts

Dear Sir,

My PC is running on Window XP (Home), may I know is it possible to set my PC

to turn On and Off automatically at certain time during the day.

After turning on , it would connect to the internet automatically and go to

certain URL to play certain song. This is a very interesting feature.

If this is impossible for Window XP, Is it possible for Window Vista ?

Is there any free download of the software I describe above over the

internet ?

Thanks

Low

Scheduling your computer to turn on at a certain time of day is

a function of your hardware. It has nothing to do with Windows,

XP or Vista. You would have to check the documentation for your

system to see if its BIOS supports this feature. If you're not

sure post back with a make and model number of your computer.

Windows XP is capable of turning your computer off at a certain

time. All you need to do is create a scheduled task to launch

this command, shutdown.exe /s, at a time of your choice.

If you want to launch a web site when the computer starts,

place a shortcut to the site in the Startup folder on your

Start menu.

Good luck

Re: Can I set my PC to turn on and off daily at certain time ?

I have my computer powered by a power strip that I turn off after shutting

down my computer. People have had problems with the power on/off button on

their computer failing (me, too). So I went into my BIOS and set it up to

automatically boot up when power was applied. That way I rarely have to use

my computer's on/off button. My computer turns on when I apply power and I

use Start | Turn off computer | Turn Off to shut it down. Then I turn my

power strip off. That removes power from other external devices I use with

my computer.

If you set up your computer this way you could insert a common kitchen clock

timer between your computer power plug in and your computer. That way you

could use Nepatsfan instruction "Windows XP is capable of turning your

computer off at a certain time. All you need to do is create a scheduled

task to launch this command, shutdown.exe /s, at a time of your choice." to

turn off your computer at a specific time. Then have your kitchen timer set

to remove power in the evening when you know you'd always be through with

your computer. Then, having the timer set to come ON with power at your

desired time would cause your computer to automatically turn on and boot up.

Re: Can I set my PC to turn on and off daily at certain time ?

No. I don't use a timer. The question I replied to was how to set his

computer to turn on and off at a certain time. That's what required the

timer.

On my own computer I use a power strip with individual on/off switches and

one master on/off switch to power my computer, monitor, external cable

modem, etc. It also has surge protection.

To save the wear and tear on my computer's on/off button all I had to do was

change my BIOS to boot up when power is applied. Each morning I turn on the

surge strip master switch and my computer boots and the other items are

powered up. At the end of the day I use Start | Turn off computer | Turn

Off to shut it down. Then I turn my power strip off. That removes power

from other external devices I use with my computer. That also prevents my

computer from starting on its own if there is a power failure which is later

restored.

Re: Can I set my PC to turn on and off daily at certain time ?

I agree it's a real Rube Goldberg setup but... it should work to do what the

guy wanted to do. To have his computer automatically power up at a given

time and then shut down again at a different time. If that is really

important enough to him it might be worth the trouble.
