Good evening all,

Unforntunely, Im in the market for a digital camera I know a little about

mega-pixels, and thats it. In not looking for a top-of-line, but I think i

would like an optical zoom.

Do all digial camera offer the feature of uploading the pixs to you pc?

Are any special adapters required e.g. DS or something?

I totally realize this is the wrong group, but this group is considered my

home, and I've never been steered wrong.

Do you ladies and gentlemaen have *any* advice, links for more info. etc.

**anything* that may educate me. I don't dare walk into a "Big Box" store

as I know I won't be satified.

I will be forever grateful, and will do my best to post helpful advice agian

in these NG's.

Humbly,

Curt

To clarify optical zoom vs. digital zoom, be aware that digital zoom

is a complete fake. It does nothing that you can't do after the fact

in the computer. The only real zoom is optical zoom. Optical zooms

range from around 3X to 18X (the Olympus SP-560 UZ, the camera I'd buy

if I were buying today).

Yes.

You either use a USB cable (normally supplied with the camera) or an

inexpensive media card reader (bought separately).

Thank you Ken,

I kind of suspected as much, but now you've effectively put the zoom area to

rest. If you're amenable to the idea, I may have a question or two more.

Thanks Ken, (and Parrott) for answering such an OT topic.

Wow!! Nice camera. I guess I'm looking for something without all the bells

and whistles, yet would be something I wouldn't be bored or dissatisfied

with in a short period of time. You-know, the kind that cuts of Uncle

Georges' head at family reunions. <vbg>

That is one heck of a nice camera, but I've seen it running into the

hundreds easy, and my picture taking is actually few and far between.

I certainly hear you about the digital optical--didn't buy it for a second!

Thanks my friend,

Without mentioning any specific brand or make of camera, the ideal digital

camera should have (a) optical zoom lens (and never digital zoom, which is

picture manipulation), (b) 5 to 10 megapixels, © hi-speed memory card of

at least 1 GB if shooting hi-resolution, (d) good viewing screen (unless

deciding on a digital-SLR camera), (e) connectivity to computer unless one

elects to use a card reader and (e) picture sharpness.

It is also best to visit a camera shop instead of a "big box" store and

actually handle the different cameras. Choose one that suits the user's

temperament when it comes to control features and play with the different

cameras. Sometimes, a top-of-the-line camera is inferior to a run-of-the-

mill one. From personal experience, one of the mid-range Nikon Coolpix's

produced better pictures than a top-end Leica.

Bring along a photographer friend. Good luck.

Thanks to all for the help you have provided, and I'll certainly take it

under advisement.

Re: WaY OT-but help!--digital cameras

I recently got myself a Canon A630. I get really nice 8MP pics. It's got

4x Optical zoom. Get a big zoom cam only if you need it- they are way

larger and heavier and are pointless if you will not use the zoom. 18x zoom

is useless if you don't feel like carrying the camera around.
