I have a windows 2003 DC/EXCH single server and the hardware is life expired.

Would like to do a straight swap. What would you reccomend is the best path?

I was considering a backup exec backup and restore...

RE: Hardware Change

If its as simple and replacing one server like for like then I would install

a second DC into the Domain with Exch 2003 in the same admin group then move

the mailboxes from the old to new Exchange, you can do this in ADUC. Move the

FSMO's to the new Server then remove the first Exchange Server from the

organisation:

See this artcile: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822931

When you have remove the DC then DCPromo the first DC out of the domain. I

hope this helps and that I have fully understood your scenario.

Would you not consider moving to Exchange 2007?

trying to do a like for like swap - and also trying to avoid changing server

name due to user shorcuts and drivemappings etc etc

scenario you suggest will involve new server name :-O

Changing a drive mapping is easy using scripts, even with simple DOS "net use

/d " and when you have taken the old server off the network create a CNAME

recored in DNS. This will allow clients to connect to the new device using

the old Server name. As long as you ensure that you have properly removed the

first Server from AD and DNS then this will not be an issue for you. How many

users have you got then ?

lots - and a lot use pptp vpn and have shortcuts on desktops etc

its still sounds simpler to do a system restore using backup exec?

can do over a weekend so down time isnt an issue..

sounds like you have already made up your mind so GL. If you have lots of

users does a single box scale, how will you migrate your sids? there is more

to this than just your mailboxes. I hope it works out for you.

RE: Hardware Change

The good thing about your plan is that you will be able to first construct it

in a lab, then as you say restore the SS using BEW. Its not how I would do it

but it would mean you could use the same Server name.
