Guest S Dotson Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 Hi, My dell computer with windows xp home has the following problem. Occasionally, and when I am doing different things like reading an article on the internet, or running an scan for adware or spyware, just different things, the computer gets a blue screen and says the following. A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Bad - Pool - Header. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any window's updates you might need. If this problem continues, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then Safe Mode. Technical information: *** Stop:0X00000019(0X000000Z0,0XE42D7350, 0XE42D7638,0X0C210201) Beginning dump of physical memory physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance. I have had the computer for over three years and hardly ever use it. It has no new software of hardware on it. I keep all updates installed. When this screen appears the computer will not shut down. I have to press and hold the start button or unplug the power to get it to shut down. I have a hard time getting it to restart. Sometimes a week passes before I can get it to start again. Then it works good for awhile and the same thing happens. The antivirus program is kept updated and virus scans run regularly. I have Spybot S&D installed and keep it updated and run a scan regularly. Any help or advice will greatly be appreciated. Star

Guest Gerry Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 Re: Dell computer with xp has an occasional problem shutting down and restarting Background on Error Code http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms793223.aspx How to Use Driver Verifier to Troubleshoot Windows Drivers http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244617/en-us Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties, Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code? Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked. Driver Verifier is not the same as using "sigverif.exe" which merely identifies whether drivers are signed. -- Hope this helps. Don't know why anyone would (both) press the power on button on the PC, and alternately, remove the AC power cord. Probably the most obvious, the lack of information regarding information while attempting to boot the PC after the problem previously occurred. The "week" thing can be interpreted many ways. Dave

Check the Event Viewer for any clues regarding the crash or even try analyzing the crash dump. You may have a device driver which is bad (unstable). If you find a bad driver decide if you are even using the hardware device such as a dial-up modem. If not disable the device. Try checking Dell's own website for driver updates for your computer. You might also think about running hardware diagnostics if you have any. The fact that you state that it will not restart immediately after the BSOD crash suggests that you may have a hardware problem.
