This is asked about 4-5 times a week, so I'll give you the short form:

Microsoft says release is *scheduled* for "1st quarter of 2008".

The overwhelming majority of it will be fixes and patches that have been

downloading through Windows Update all along - if your computer is set

up for automatic download.

I'm not clear myself on what else may be in it.

well, thanks. i asked this in the news groups about 4 or more months back

when i was beta testing vista and someone said the 2nd half of 2008. does

microsoft keep changing thier mind on this like every few weeks or

something? just wondering.

i really hope service pack 3 comes out soon. i realy need it. right now

there feels like there are like 100 or so downloads after sp2 is installed.

and not everything seems to be availible on windows update. some you either

have to call for or you have to go to the microsoft download center and

search for.

Keep wondering. And come back again in four months to ask again.

WHY?

Haven't you been regularly updating your computer? If the answer is

no, don't expect MS to correct your laziness.

well, maybe we will all get luck and it might be out by then or so and i

will not need to ask again.

No, it doesn't. Do not make the common mistake of confusing an

estimate of when something will be available with a promise.

don't worry, i'm not making the mistake. not on this. i'm just hoping for

the best. afterall XP is better than vista....lol. vista just has bugs that

need to be worked out then maybe it can be labeled as a better operating

system. but thats just my opinion of it.

Maybe the guy has to re-install his Windows XP and would rather

not have to download and install all those pathes.

(preinstalled or not.) hopefully preinstalled...lol i think everyone wants

sp3 so they don't have to deal with them all.

Well when you ask "does microsoft keep changing thier mind on this

making that mistake. They can't change their mind if they haven't

Right. it's your opinion. As I said, it's not mine. Do you run Vista

Have you run Vista? I'm happy with it here.

i had a tx1000z with vista on it but i returned it after a week because of

application compatility problems. it just bothered me to much. i also tested

the beta and the weird thing was that the beta had less issues in certian

places.

i'm sure that others are happy with vista though. i'm sortta a perfectionist

in a way when it comes to computers. i need to have everything working the

way i want it to or else it will bother the heck outta me. in beta programs

i don't really care.

i exchanged it for a tc4400 with windows XP on it.:)

Re: service pack 3 release date

Are you asking when XP SP3 will RTM, or when the XP SP3 Beta will start?

XP SP3 is tied to the Server 2008 Beta and the Vista SP1 Beta in that all 3

will include some new Networking updates.

A couple of Microsoft folks let slip the release date as potentially

being by the years end but who knows. A first beta was supposed to be

out by the middle of this month but it's still not out. Some other

have speculated that the release of XP SP3 and Vista SP1 will be

around the same time and pre-empt Server 2008 because of the new

features being added to XP SP3 in the way of NAP.

It's been a while since I've re-installed XP with SP2 slipstreamed

because it IS a hassle to get all the little updates from WU not to

mention non-WU patches for other odd problems. It'll be nice to

slipstream SP3 and finally be able to do a re-install. You are aware

of things like Ryan VMs update packs, right? Officially, Microsoft's

web page says 1st half 2008, that officially means Jan 1st or June

30th (and all dates in between). So it's either 3 months away or, as

far as I am concerned, when server 2008 hits RTM. It's more contingent

on that release than whatever's on their web site. We've all waited

since 2004 and lots of pushed-back release date so what's a few more

months.

No, it does *not* officially mean that. That "first half of 2008" is

an *estimate*, not a promise.

No, there have been *no* pushed-back release dates. No date has ever

been announced. You are again confusing estimates with promises.

Personally I wish Microsoft would never publish these estimated dates.

All they do is confuse people, who too often treat them as promises.

I don't mean to feed the trolls but, what exactly does the 1st half of

2008 mean? January 1st until June 30th is the 1st half of any year. I

don't know what calendar you own, but mine doesn't promise but

guarantees me that Jan 1st through June 30th will be the 1st half of

the year.

You do know it is well documented since at least 2005 of the release

date of SP3 and it continuously kept being postponed as Vista was

being hyped, pruned, plucked, scrapped, and then re-written again,

right? There are dozens if not a hundred tech, editorial, blog, and

news sites that have this fact historically documented. The Microsoft

Service Pack Road Map schedule web site has been updated MANY times

with the date change and release for SP3. The only fact one can garner

from that web site is that the SP3 date is "preliminary." Preliminary

is more an estimate and less of a promise.

Some historical information:

Again, see above. By release date, I guess it cannot ever be said that

a specific *date* was give but release schedules were.

Don't blame Microsoft, blame their Executives and Management's lack of

competency in product and service delivery. Or just blame Ballmer

because he's the one who said it would ship before Vista on numerous

occasions. If, like the rest of us, you feel that SP1 for Vista will

actually make RTM Gold, then yes, if SP3 ships before Vista SP1, he's

not going to be a liar after all.
