ok...some of you might recognize my name from a previous post...well boys an girls it just got a little darker....i couldn't take it so i backed up what i could and wiped the drives and repartitioned....now its almost alright...there is some message of impending doom regarding my c: drive...let me explain

 

i am getting a SMART error message telling me my hard drive may soon fail me...i dont know what this means exactly so i looked online...the only option i've seen is :

" Backup your information and contact the manufacturer of the computer or hard disk drive for replacement or additional help. In some very rare cases the S.M.A.R.T. implementation on your computer may have issues of its own and may need to be patched before replacing the hard drive. "

 

i was wondering if there is any other solution to this pesky problem...ty

You could disable SMART Monitoring in the BIOS. What keys you use to get into the BIOS depends on your computer. BIOS keys.

 

The error could be legitimate which means your hard drive could be failing or it might not be. Given your previous issues it might be going bad but then again I would have thought that would have been detected during the install proccess.

 

You could run chkdsk to see if there are any errors.

 

Open Computer and right click the hard drive.

Click Properties.

Click Tools.

In Error-checking click Check Now.

 

If you just want to see the results of the scan and not fix anything uncheck both boxes and click Start.

 

If you want it to find and repair physical errors on the drive select Scan For and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors.

 

Was there any problems during the install and does everything appear to be working ok now except for the SMART error?

Hi bluescreen,

 

Looking back through your posts, with the problems you were having, I wondered then if you had a hardware issue - probably alongside malware infestation.

 

In my experience, SMART will warn you of impending doom, you computer may run fine for ages - I've seen an HP run for 6 months with SMART errors simply because the user didn't understand what it meant. After cloning the drive and checking the SMART attributes of the old drive, sure enough it was on its way out.

 

Faulty sectors can be 'repaired', but I would guess on a drive with SMART errors, the error threshold has increased too much and you may only buy a little time.

 

Most of the drive manufacturers have a downloadable test program which may help diagnose the problem.

 

Do you know the make and model of your hard drive?

Try this free SMART status reader diskcheckup.exe from this site:

 

PassMark DiskCheckup - SMART hard drive monitoring utility

 

Should be able to easily determine if the errors are bogus or real.

alright thanks for your input....i downloaded that disk checkup thing an this is what i got when i ran it....

Hi,

 

From the results you have posted above, it seems that the Reallocated sector count test has failed.

 

In my opinion, if I ever see hard drives fail on certain tests, I always (and would recommend) to purchase a new drive.

 

Data on my hard drive is far too important to loose, so the first signs of failing hard drive I backup and replace..

 

However I guess it depends on how much you value the data on the hard drive and whether you can actually afford a new drive or not.

 

I would check to see if your drive is still under warranty, if so, contact Samsung for a replacement.
