An Internet Explorer 6 Frustrating Problem

Recommended Posts

I have had many recent crashes on IE6, SP1 (particulary on content-

rich sites, such as nhl.com). When I try to repair it through the add/

remove programs part of Control Panel, repair stops and says it cannot

be repaired, please run setup again. The details show it cannot load

"mstime.dll". I downloaded a good copy of "mstime.dll" and put it in

the windows/system folder. Upon further IE6 repair attempts, I get

the identical error.

Any suggestions??

Another suggestion might be the relatively simple approach of reinstalling

IE6 SP1 over itself from your CD. That is more effective than that Repair

thing. But if you do this, you will likely lose any updates you have made

to IE (if any). (If you haven't made any, then that's not an issue).

Thanx for the sugestion. I'd love to reload IE6, but I don'y have the

CD. Attempting download from Microsoft's site downloads very little

data (if any). Does anybody have an internet source for ALL of IE6

(rather than Microsoft)?

Do you have a folder named "Windows Update SetupFiles". This could be a directory on the C: drive or

as a sub-folder under Windows folder.

If so double click on ie6setup.exe and away you go.

Re: An Internet Explorer 6 Frustrating Problem

You're running Win98, right?

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes

your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline). Start >

Run > (type in) IE6Setup.exe > [OK]. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all

the parts you use (e.g., Outlook Express) but none that you didn't

originally download, and overinstall. Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot

the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at

Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

That file is part of IE6. It gets updated later. Here is the original

from IE_S5.CAB...

MSTIME.DLL

It's possible you must delete the one you've got (if it's the higher

version), because the install of IE6 won't overwrite a higher version.

Then, try the install of IE6 once more. After that, go to Windows Update

& take the latest Cumulative IE Update. More than just that one file

will get updated, making all of the files compatible with each other, I

think.

PA Bear,

Thanx for the suggestion. Yes, I have WIN98SE. I performed the tasks

exactly as you wrote, all went OK, until reboot, when the SAME error

message:

'An error occured loading "C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mstime.dll". The filemay

not have been installed or it has been corrupted'

AGAIN ocurred....

Still frustrated and looking for help.

Nom, other programs cannot locate .DLL's, even though I can easily

find them where they should be. Is there some registry errors??

Any suggestions??

I removed the existing mstime.dll (which was version 6.00.2800.1538),

and re-performed the re-installation as suggested above (with only

explorer running). Same result and error message as before occured.

Very frustrating, any other suggestions?? How does IE "know" where

mstime.dll is?

Reapply 916281 since it DOES contain the file in question and the much

smaller update would be much easier to download than the complete IE6

files on a troubled system.

http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/IE6.0sp1-KB916281-Windows-98-ME-x86-ENU_39e4cfd60d6b77424d640afab75c3a5.exe

Watch for word wrap on that one, there are no spaces.

It should be among a list of dlls in the registry that Windows

consults to find where it is. It gets into the list by being

registered by regsvr32.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249873

Something possibly went wrong with that process?

After you get it fixed...

You should keep trying to reinstall IE until you have complete

SUCCESS. And then revisit WinUP site to reinstall all critical

updates called for. 916281will probably be one of them.

Any idea where you got version 6.00.2800.1538 mstime.dll?

What's your current version of IE (see IE Help > About; e.g.,

Have you ever had occasion to reinstall Win98?

You had a version higher than my highest, which is ...1537, & I am fully

updated. Too bad deleting it first didn't make a difference. Are you

running Win98 or something else? Can it be you have downloaded the wrong

version of IE6 SP1 (if there is such a thing)? Here is what Bear once

posted for where to get it, but it seems the one version will work in

multiple OS...

.........Quote.............

After reinstalling Win98, you must upgrade to IE6 SP1 before you can use

Windows Update, yes; otherwise, you should be able to access any other

web-page, including Microsoft's.

Download IE6 SP1 (full; 9 KB - 77.5 MB)

1. Make sure Internet Explorer 6 SP1 is not running.

(In Windows XP, click Start and then click Control Panel.)

3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

4. Select Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP 1.

Yes. I looked inside with WinZip, & indeed MSTIME.DLL v.6.00.2800.1537

I guess it is worth a try to run this cumulative update, but I'd prefer

one more try of IE6 SP1 first-- done after uninstalling whatever shows

Re: An Internet Explorer 6 Frustrating Problem

I would get a cd that has Internet Explorer 6 full version from a friend

or you can always try Microsoft because they may have a few extra ones left

over but your support from Microsoft will be limited to none because of the

cut off date of July 11, 2006 for Windows 98, 98 Second Edition and Windows

ME. Hopefully, the cd will install properly and then you have Internet

Explorer 6 and proceed to download the latest updates from Microsoft.

Please be sure you have proper antivirus protection, like AVG

antivirus, proper anti-spyware protection such as Spybot Search and Destroy

and SpywareBlaster to stop baddies from getting into your computer. In

addition, check grc.com and Shields Up to see if your first 1000+ ports are

fully stealthed. In addition, are you connected via wireless or ethernet/usb

wired connection or some other way?

Finally, please consider another browser that supports 256 bit AES

(Advanced Encryption Standard), is open source, still supported with Windows

98, and even supports Apple like Mozilla Firefox. The 256 bit cipher

strength is only available in Windows Vista currently for Internet Explorer.

I have let Microsoft know about this security issue but since Microsoft has

the majority of the browser market, they are sometimes slow to fix security

issues. Please see the secunia.com website for all vulnerabilites in

software and just use the search box. Have a great rest of the week.

Current version if IE is 6.0.2800.1106IS

I just checked the MSTIME.DLL version again and it's still

6.00.2800.1538

Modified Friday, March 03, 2006 5:15:12 PM

I had attempted to re-install WIN 98SE from the disc. During the

process (after 100% of the files are installed), upon the first

automatic restart, the regestry checker comes in and installs a backup

registry, and the installation never really "completes". Tried this

several times in a row. Strange how a BACKUP registry still gets

restored from a backup AGAIN upon another re-installation attempt, eh?

This set of posts is getting somewhat convoluted. Let me try my

summary of EI issues in one post, and actions in another.

About a week ago, I noticed that "high content" web sites, such as

NFL.com (which has a LOT of animated adds) acted really strange.

After the page was fully downloaded (no more network activity

confirmed), almost the ENTIRE web page would flash, blink (repaint?)

with any change of ANY animation on the page. If I tried to click on

any link on the page, I got the "WHITE-BOX" error that IE caused a

problem with an "Ignore" button and a "Close" button. Neither button

did much of anything. "Typically" (I tried many times) the system

just hung up and I had to reset to reboot. Several times the "Close"

button brought up more white boxes, with different backround programs

with the same situation. In all cases, I had to reset the machine to

reboot.

I eventually started Process Explorer to monitor what was going on

while I revisited nfl.com. I found that, EVEN AFTER THE PAGE WAS

FULLY LOADED, IE was using more than 50% of the CPU to keep the page

up! If I clicked on any link, CPU usage rose 100%, then guess what,

PROCESS EXPLORER got the "white box" display! Then IE got the White

Box display, then the system was hung.

Somehow, pages with a lot of animation were demanding what I beleive

to be excessive amounts of CPU load. This apparently caused isues

with any (many) other backround programs and brought the system down.

Anybody else experiencing this??

It sounds like you may have spyware, adware, virus or other problems. Please

back up what data you can and format your computer. I would also throughly

scan the backup(s) for infection. Enjoy the rest of your week. Please make

sure you have all the software you need to reinstall the operating system. I

always helps even a technically inclined person to have one or two friends to

help you with your issues and to set aside lots of time to accomplish this

task. Please do not get too frustrated and realize that there is always a

chance you may have hardware issues also but for now it seems limited to

software issues. If you are confused, you may want to start a new post on

properly acccomplishing the task and tell us as much as you can about your

computer hardware to help us -- help you. Good Luck!

Somehow you're running an ISP-customized version of IE (as denoted by the IS

in "6.0.2800.1106IS"), but it wasn't necessarily IE v6 that was customized.

(IOW, it may have been, e.g., IE5.5 SP1; IE5.5; or IE5.01 SP1.) This may

have something to do with it.

That being said, other than the error involving MSTIME.DLL when you attempt

to Repair or Overinstall IE6 SP1, is IE6 working OK for you or is it still

"crashing" (as posted by you in your first post in this thread)?

Wish I'd read this reply before posting my last one.

Sounds like a hijackware problem to me.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log

to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2

(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with

assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

In the face of Dan's & Bear's scary comments, STILL I did click...

http://www.nfl.com/

It did load truly a ton of TIFs that avast! Antivirus did scan-- I have

it set to display them in pop-up boxes. There was no report of a virus

coming in. A few times the screen did blink blue during its download.

However, I had no crash. The screen remains active after downloading, as

some images are animated & do change. Process Explorer reports CPU usage

for that IE instance to be as low as in the 20%'s & as high as in the

50%'s. After clicking a link on the page, CPU usage rose into the 70%'s.

Also, typing is SLOW!

Uh-oh, my Kerio Firewall has asked twice for permission that I

denied...!...

'Internet Explorer' from your computer wants to connect to

72.246.30.180, port 1935

'Internet Explorer' from your computer wants to connect to

72.246.30.179, port 443

I also denied all its Cookie offerings. I don't like that site at all!

Lucky I'm a baseball guy! After closing Process Explorer, typing is

normal, though. (It uses a lot of CPU, itself.) Let me click another

link... typing is near-normal after the download, even though animation

continues. Everything is perfectly normal after closing the site, that I

can see.

SO... its a BUSY site, but didn't crash me. Do run those badie-detectors

Bear suggested-- & let me know the result. But I thankfully don't

immediately see anything especially suspicious in my own HiJackThis

report.

Well, I did a scan with Spybot S&D, no change, then a scan with

XoftSpySE, it found a LOT more bad stuff! I permitted it to fix

everything, and re-booted.

I then went back to nfl.com and NO FLASHING, NO BLINKING! However,

upon clicking on the page, another page partially loaded, then the

"White Box" returned... IEXPLORE caused a problem....CLOSE or

IGNORE. Details of following screens were as follows...

IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in

module GDI.EXE at 0001:0000722c.

Registers:

EAX=00100001 CS=058f EIP=0000722c EFLGS=00000202

EBX=0000c04f SS=6137 ESP=0000ad08 EBP=0000ad0c

and eventually I have to reboot...The START button will "push down",

but stays "down" and does nothing...

I see a Microsoft acrticle about this, but it deals with an error

message upon printing a page, due to a corrupted font "BD DENVER",

which does not exist in my font folder..

Seems there's always more than one problem...
