(win xp)

when I reboot the pc, there was a message that said "new hardware found, cd-rewriter". I checked the station, and I saw that the cd-rewriter station (supposed to be station (W: ) has suddenly another letter, (H: ). Also, when I put a disc in the cd-rewriter, nothing happens, but after a while pc freezes and I have to reboot.

In the device manager, there is no yellow (!) where the cd-rewriter properties are stated, and it says "this device works correctly".

Hello Okeee

Welcome to FPCH

Have you recently installed another optical device or hard drive at all?

If not then go into Device Manager and uninstall the CDRW, reboot and allow Windows to "find" the drive again.

Let us know if this works.

I uninstalled the drivers under "device manager", then reboot, and the "windows installed new hardware" message appeared. But nothing changed, the cd-writer still does not work. It seemed like It seems as if it keeps reading the disc. I put in an empty disc but the same thing happens. This problem occured suddenly, so it's not a new cd-writer I'm trying to install. It used to work ok.

Hi and welcome, it is beginning to look like a duff CD drive. Any chance of borrowing one from a friend to try in its place, if it works that will prove the point. If another drive doesn't work it will also prove there may be a software issue.
