MPREXE error message

Did a clean install of 98SE , plus, I used the update packs from Gary .

 

Got down to the "Recommended Updates \ Mapped Drives Shut Down" and

after the install, rebooted.

 

Now, it locks up before getting into Windows and pops up an error message

as follows:

 

MPREXE

 

This program has performed an illegal operation

and will be shut down.

 

If the problems persists, contact the program vendor.

 

 

Have tried booting into Safe Mode with the same result.

 

Booted to the DOS prompt and looked for MPREXE in the Windows directory

but found nothing.

 

What's the solution to getting past this so everything works ????
