im not sure please help?

hey there guys.

firstly im not sure if this is a soundcard related problem or motherboard so if this is the wrong forum i am extreemely sorry .

 

but the problem is that when i plug speakers and a mic into my computer, the computer seems to not be able to see them

and it is as if i have not plugged them in

i was reading other posts and i was wondering if it has anything to do with the motherboard not recognising the devices or if it was purely a soundcard issue.

 

please help me :D

Have you tried going into Sound & Audio Devices in the Control Panel and seeing what is enabled under Audio & Voice tabs

Hi, first of all, a warm welcome to you from me, and a question or two. Can you tell us the make and model of your computer, and is it an on board sound system, or a sound card plugged in to a PCI slot, if so what make and model?

Has the sound worked previously? and when did it stop working, had you installed a new program or any thing else that may have turned it off. Answers to those will help us to go further.

thanks for the help so far

i have checked in control panel but its as if the computer doesnt recognise that the devices are plugged in

i think it may have something to do with a faulty soundcard maybe

but also when i boot my computer because it hasnt been on in a long while, it says my cmos battery is runnign low, could that have any effect ?

the computer is a packard bell iExtreme i believe, not sure if thats the model bt thats what the comp says

 

secondly when i look inside the comp there seems to be a soundcard plugged in although that was alreaddy in when i got the comp, so it may be an onboard one, im not too good with comps :P

 

but if it is not an on board one i have no idea of the make and model, and the changes i made recently was just reinstalling windows xp

 

but when i first bought the computer and installed windows, there was no problem with my sound then

On-board sound is what is installed with the motherboard (there will be no card). Is the speaker & microphone plugged into the sound card that you mention?

Can you have a look in Device Manager under Audio Devices and tell us if your sound card is listed, and if it has a yellow ? or ! against it.

 

If you go to the Packard Bell website, then to Support you can type in your serial number and your computer spec will be listed.

 

If you are not sure, post your PC serial number and we can check it out for you.

From that I deduce that the sound drivers for your soundcard or not / improperly installed. Tell us the make and model number of your soundcard and we will try our best to search for the appropriate driver.

 

And you also need to change your CMOS battery. The CMOS battery retains the settings for BIOS and other important configurations so better change it now. If you are unsure on how to do this, here is a small article on how to replace a CMOS battery.

It just sounds like the drivers are not installed - or not installed properly - when you bought the PC - there should have been some disks with it - maybe labelled something like ''Utilities and Tools'' or ''Drivers''

And reinstall from that after removing the other ones from add/remove if they are there.

Hi Glad it is sorted, I saw from one of your earlier replies that you had re-installed Windows XP. With separate sound cards, you usually do have to re-install the drivers after a re-install of the OS. However I have been away, so every one else beat me to it.:D
