felixm Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 What are the obvious(objective) reasons for getting an imac over a Pc? My sister likes the look of an imac she has seen, but will only use a computer for general applications, ie mp3, video, web browsing. Nothing specialised. Do most pc associated programmes run on Mac's? any thoughts? Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 There are pros and cons for both - BUT Windows based laptops are cheaper - she could even get a netbook for around £200 for just browsing the net and the odd word/excel doc - the software is readily available as are games etc - and people know how to use windows - if your sister has never used a MAC OS then I would suggest against it - as Saxon has said people tend to buy macs for specific reasons and general usage is not one of them in my opinion. felixm Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 cheers for the advice. i myself told her there is no point for just general use. Quote

Guest Wolfeymole Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 Yes it can Felix. Apple - Mac OS X Leopard - Features - Boot Camp I think this is more of a.............girly thing to be honest, please tell your sister I'm not trying to be sexist. You can't run a Mac OS on Windows though. Quote
felixm Posted November 4, 2008 Author Posted November 4, 2008 oh i know she just likes the look of the mac for that reason. Quote

mike Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 I own and run a MacBook, and have to say the switch over from Windows to Mac was a pleasure. For a few reasons why you should get a Mac, visit apples website here. Apple - Get a Mac - Why you'll love a Mac Also, they have complied a list of FAQ's Apple - Get a Mac - FAQ In terms of software, as Saxon said you can't just go out and buy a copy from most shops, (You could use Windows on your Mac to run the given software, as Wolfey suggested), however there are some good places on the internet for Mac Alternatives to Windows Software. Mac OS X Apps - The Source For Mac OS X Software You might also want to consider CrossOver which allows you to run Windows Products and PC Games seamlessly on a Mac. No need for Boot Camp. Tootech Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 I have a friend who uses MAC's and Windows boxes, he always goes on about MAC's being superior. Have to say I used to just ignore him, but.....after using one for a while, I really like them. The screen feels fresh & sharp, and they just work. If you know what you want, and are happy to pay for the software you need, then I would say they are a great machine. Where you can struggle is getting local support - just have a look in Yellow Pages to see how many people support them - not many I'm afraid. Most PC support guys can find their way around, but much more than thaat and they will aplogise and leave. Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Macs to me are like Philips equipment or Marmite, you either love it or hate it. Quote
TheSlee Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 I have a friend who runs a mac and to be honest, I think they are better for business and work, but for anything else I would go for a PC all the way. Quote
Tony D Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 My business machine is a Mac and my personal machine is a Mac. I don't worry about malware. I don't worry about the registry getting corrupted when the power goes out. I haven't had to reformat and reload the OS in either machine ever. I've been using the personal machine since Feb 2000 and the business machine since Nov 2001. They just keep on going. Also - both are laptops. The only reason I can see to use a Windows machine over a Mac is software. Here in the states, the realtors use software that can only be accessed by Internet Explorer, which is no longer available for the Mac. You may have other programs that don't run on the Mac. However, for most users, I see no reason to use a Windows machine. Of course, the newer Intel-based Macs can also run Windows. Quote Need help with your computer problems? sangfroid Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 My 2p's worth on this issue. PC's are cheaper and more readily abled to be upgraded hardware wise. If a gamer ,then no contest, I think, with the new CPU's and GPU's technology then PC's running Windows will win hands down. As for business then Mac's are fine. Quote
reznor12 Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 On the gaming side of things mac's are catching up. with their new contract with nvida they are better now with games than ever ( tho upgrading is still a problem). i am gettin increasingly tempted by macs, im just sick of windows operating systems messing up every secs. You can't run a Mac OS on Windows though. Mac OS can be run on pc (illegally), thus named a HACINTOSH. but it won't run smooth and you must have an intel processor. Plus it takes work to keep it running. Quote I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me -Noel Coward :p

In any given town or city there are only so many Mac users. The computers belonging to those Mac users don't break down very often and so the computer repair guys don't read up on how to repair Macs. They don't really need to when Windows computers break down so often and keep them running round like lost monkeys trying to keep up. Quote
