can ping but cant see sites

hi im having a problem that just recently started. when i go onto a web browser (firefox, ie and chrome) some websites will not open, google, gmail i can get onto. and sites that are based in the uk such as bbc news and my university portal website. but others such as facebook and other pc help sites will not open. i went into the command promt and did the ping facebook.com etc and it worked fine. any idea what the problem is??

 

i am using a toshiba laptop with vista and am connected wirelessly.

Are you running any firewall, especially Zone Alarm? It is known to cause such problems. Also, did you make any recent software / hardware changes before you first encountered the problem?

hi, yes i do have a firewall on. but it asnt affected me like this before, and my browsers seem to have access. i have kaspersky internet suite. the problem stopped for a while, and seemed like it was back to normal. now it has started again.

 

i did install a game (fallout 3) but that was a good 6hours or so before the problem occured. and when it happened today again i had installed another program but again it was hours earlier than when the problem came up again.

It sounds like a setting in your kaspersky firewall. Perhaps Anti-Banner. Or it could be your suites Parental control settings.
