Having to restart print server

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi,

I have a Windows 2003 domain and we have a Genicom 5000 printer that

ocassionally will not print until we restart the print service on the

server. After that, it prints fine for awhile. This happens about once a

week. It's the only printer on our network that does it. The firmware is

up-to-date on it and it is using a Generic driver because it is a line

printer. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Thanks.

Hello,

while this one doesn't work, you can print still print to others without

restarting the spooler ?

Can this printer go to standby mode or any power saving mode ?

We can still print to every printer but this one. Once we restart the print

service, any print jobs for this Genicom will take off and work fine. I'm

not sure if it can go in to standby or power save mode or not. That's

something I'd have to check. It only happens occasionally, not every day.

You may also look after users, they tends to switch off printers or play

around some times.

If they switch off the printer, windows will put it offline.

Re: Having to restart print server

"Supposedly" it's not being turned off. We can have a user call up and say

that this printer isn't printing and we can see that it's offline and

there's print jobs waiting. We can then go on the server and restart the

print service and that fixes it for the time being. I'm curious if it's

going in to Standby or Power Save mode. I'll have to check on that the next

time it happens.

Re: Having to restart print server

What about just forcing it to go online from Windows through the File menu ?

Re: Having to restart print server

Haven't tried that yet. I just recently inherited this problem from a

fellow Admin. I'll give that a try the next time it happens.
