Andivarious Destivari Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Hi, I haven't used this before, nor do I use forums a lot, so please forgive me if I do something stupid :-)! I'm helping a friend who doesn't know much about computers learn how to use his computer. He has recently decided that he would like to experiment with gaming. So, I checked his comp's specs and found a game that he thought looked interesting and fit his specs. We now have a Home design program and Dungeon Lords, both of which should run fine. However, everytime I try to install anything, when the install asks for the next disk, I put it in and then click ok, but it freezes right there, with the button still pushed it and everything. Not even task manager has an easy time of ending the program. Every multi disk program that I try to install does the same thing. What's odd is that this didn't start until about a week and a half ago. I now have the computer in my home and have tried everything that I know how to do to fix the problem, and as you may have guessed, no dice. I've defraged and cleaned it, I've run virius checks on it, and everything else and nothing works. His computer has just decided that it just doesn't like multi-disk programs I think. He's running the XP 5.1.2600 service pack 2 build 2600. His computer is a Lenovo 3000 N100. He has IE7 and is running a fully updated Norton Internet Security program. He's not using any P2P programs and he's got the google toolbar for blocking pop-ups... Not that I think that all of this is relevant, but you never know. Anyway, if someone could please lend me a hand, I'd really appreciate it. If more info is needed I'm more then happy to do what I can, just respond to this form or e-mail me at my posted address, I'll be checking both fairly frequently. Thank you very much. Quote
RandyL Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Hello; I've found a couple links. http://www.askdavetaylor.com/using_my_pcs_cdrom_drive_freezes_up_windows_xp.html http://ask-leo.com/when_i_insert_a_cd_or_dvd_into_my_dvd_rom_the_computer_freezes_what_should_i_do.html It might be several things. Try a cleaner disk. Or it might be a misaligned lasar lens. Or a bad cd drive. Check the cables. Update the drivers. Enable DMA in the device manager if it isn't already. Just a guess. A few have reported problems when nero/incd is installed. Try disabling if you have it. That's all the guesses I have; RandyL Quote We are all members helping other members. Andivarious Destivari Posted March 2, 2007 Author Posted March 2, 2007 Hmmm... Well, I tried your suggetions. The drive is an external drive and the drivers are good. The computer has the same problems when I use the built in drive as well. I know that the disk is being read because there is a window that pops open automatically that tells me what's on the disk. The only thing I didn't do is enable DMA, how do I do that? Thank you for your efforts. Does anyone else have any ideas? -Andi Quote
