Not sure if this is the right place to post but heres my problem

My heatsink fan is not working (plugged it into the mobo)and I'm not sure why and when i try boot my computer it locks up and I've tried to reinstall windows xp but the computer locks up please help not sure what to do.My friend said I might need to buy a new mobo but I thought I should ask the experts :P

When you say the heatsink you mean the one on top of the CPU (Processor) yes?

does the fan spin at all?

if not then all you will need is a new heatsink for the CPU - if you have no heatsink on or the fan does not spin the processor is getting hot and shutting the pc down.

The heatsink is new and it is the fan on top and I have plugged it into the motherboard OCZ Vanquisher CPU Cooler For Sockets AMD 754/939/AM2, Intel LGA775 - Ebuyer

Did it come with any heat paste on it? did you put any on?

you may not have alot on and the processor is not being cooled sufficiently as the heat is not passing to the heatsink.

It came with the stuff on thats not the problem the cpu fan on the heatsink is not spinning

Have you checked the settings in the BIOS - you can DISABLE the fan headers from working - check that they are ENABLED

It will be in the overclocking part of the BIOS top left and then under fan controls (I think its the top one again) and set them all to enable.

I can not find Qfan anywhere and in advance it theres a list of boot devices

Right - its under Advanced BIOS - PC health status - there are options like CPU fan SMART control (ENABLE THIS)

Right - time to shop for an external fan controller :(

They are only about £10 for a cheap one and £40 for an all singing all dancing real time power consumption one like mine :D

 

Actually before you do that remove the fan from the heatsink (it should just clip on) and try it on the header at the bottom right of the board to see if it then works - if it does you need either an external fan controller or a cable to entend the cable.

Check the fan in the other header first as if that then works you just need an extention to the cable and I will source one for you - if it doesnt work then I will source you an external controller ok.

You dont want to needlessly spend money thats all

YAY it worked the cpu fan is working :) but the freezing problem still happening :confused: and in pc health its says its at 30º Edited November 8, 2008 by Sean911

Cant remember if I asked this, but who put the thermal paste on?

30 degrees is not alot and it should not overheat at that - if the GPU cooled sufficiently and the HDD's too?

Yeah it has and do you think its a harddrive problem or motherboard problem just so confused I have installed xp to the harddrive but it not always being dectected and it dosnt boot up without my xp disk and that dosnt always work

Right - when you install the OS - and the system is all installed the next time it restarts, you need to go back to the BIOS and set the first boot device to HDD.

or the system will run in a loop trying to install the OS if you leave the boot device as CDROM and the CD in the drive.

There could be an issue with the HDD or the MOBO - if its a heat issue that would more likely point to the MOBO being faulty.

Do you have a spare HDD that you could try and install and run the OS on that?

It is very hard to try and see whats wrong with problems like this as we are not physically there, as a note when you reply can you please try and include as much info to help us as you can.

Well I'm not sure what else I can tell you erm I have two harddrives plugged in one Sata and one IDE and a 7800GT GPU and AMD 3000+ 2.10ghz and two cdrom RW's and 2gb of kingston RAM thats all I know of
