fisherman Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Using IE7 in winxp home edition. IE worked well till last saturday then it reported that it was "unable to display page" and diagnostics blamed firewall settings and port settings.I followed microsoft help step by step through to advanced user reregistering IE files. All to no avail. I then loaded ie8 beta and had same problem. Other users on my computer unaffected just my IE problem. I loaded firefox and it worked perfectly. Then during one run of firefox I imported settings from IE 7 (to make life easier) and the problem migrated to firefox. I deleted firefox and reinstalled with same problem as before and same problem as IE7. mmmm! Quote
Goku Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Hello and Welcome to FPCH Fisherman. :) Try resetting the Internet Explorer settings to their default state and see if it helps or not. How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES) Let us know how it goes though. Good Luck. -- Goku Quote
RandyL Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 Hi fisherman. Did you uninstall IE8 beta? I don't recommend using beta versions as they are still in the testing phase and can cause problems. If you have not uninstalled it then I would suggest trying a system restore to before you installed it versus an uninstall. Even an uninstall may go badly on beta products. For that matter if Gokus suggestion doesn't work and if you are going to use system restore anyway choose a point to before IE quit working. It's worth a try. BeeCeeBee Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 Hi Fisherman and welcome. I am not sure what you mean by other users unaffected. When they log in to their settings does IE work for them? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
fisherman Posted November 8, 2008 Author Posted November 8, 2008 Hi Goku I tried the reset but the problem persists. Hi Randyl the system restore function does not restore to any previous date so I assume this is part of the problem. Hi Beeceebee I mean that others who log on at startup on my computer do not have a problem with internet explorer only my login creates the problem. Thanks for your help folks i was pleasantly surprised to see such quick responses to my mail. Take care Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 Hi Fisherman We appreciate the thanks but our real aim is to get you sorted. Your problem seems very close to one I had a month or so ago and was definately caused by a malware infection. What we suggest is that you take the following steps to detect any Malware and get rid of it. Once you are done come back and let us know how you made out and whether there has been an improvement and we will go from there. Your computer probably is infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. Required Cleanup StepsDisable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF) Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below) Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below) Clear out old System Restore points If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes. The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean.
