So yes, you do indeed have a dns problem. Try the Winsocks fix:

WinSock XP Fix download and review - fix XP internet connectivity from SnapFiles

If that doesn't work, pursue the solutions in the following link. The most important will be checking your dns settings;

Hi Susie,

I have come across a machine with an identical fault to yours recently.

After a lot of work I uninstalled XP Service Pack 3 from the machine and the Internet access was restored.

On reinstalling Service Pack 3 the Internet was fine.

We have checked everything else possible, do you know if Service Pack 3 has been installed recently? You will be able to tell by looking in the Add/Remove Programs menu, making sure you have ticked the box at the top "Show Updates"

Please uninstall Service Pack 3 if you have it and recheck your internet connection.
