black icons

When I am online and have 2 or more windows open from the same site

occasionally/eventually the icon on the button in the system tray will turn

completely black and shortly after that windows will inform me that it has

to close. What's up with this behavior and how can I fix it?

Re: black icons

What "icon on the button in the system tray" are you referring to?

Exactly how does Windows inform you that it has to close? What message do you

receive, in its entirety? Does it say you are low on resources or some other error?

Do any other icons turn black at this time? If you are having a problem with icons

turning black in general, or the wrong icon displaying, try this:

Delete the shelliconcache file from Safe Mode, per the instructions here:

Icons Displayed Incorrectly in Control Panel:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=133733

OR,

Click Start>Settings> Control Panel> Display> Appearance tab:

Click the "Item:" drop-down list and select "Icon"

Note the current icon size in the "Size:" box next to that.

Change the size, click Apply.

Change the size back to what it was, click OK.

And,

Find the file named shelliconcache (it has no file extension), in the Windows

folder, and delete it or rename it to shelliconcache.bak, then re-boot.

OR,

If you have TweakUI installed, click Start> Settings> Control Panel> TweakUI>

"Repair" tab, select "Rebuild Icons" and click Repair Now.

Download and install TweakUI1.33:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/winme/Install/1.0/WinMe/EN-US/Tweakui.exe

Following that, set the Max Icon Cache setting in the Registry to 2048:

http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm

Scroll to 'IconCache Fix', download, unzip, then right-click the enclosed .reg file,

click Merge on the menu that appears, and OK to the confirmation message.

It starts with the site that has multiple windows open but eventually all

the icons turn black.

I tried a few of the options below but it didn't help.(Tweakui and

MaxIconCache to 2048)

Re: black icons

This is the advice that has been posted elsewhere. It involves removing the

latest version of the Adobe Flash player, and installing an older version.

FWIW, I do not allow any version of Flash layer to be installed on any of my

machines. I'm told I am missing some animations in certain web sites, but I

can live with that.

Quote

To install Flash Player 8, follow the instructions on these pages:

Uninstalling:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157

Installation of Flash Player 8:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14266

Read the readme.txt in the latter to find the right version for your browser

and OS.

Where was this posted? The Flash Player site says that FP#9 supports my

system. Do the FP folks not understand their own software?

System requirements

Hardware

Adobe has tested Adobe® Flash® Player 9 extensively on the following minimum

hardware configurations:

Windows

Intel® Pentium® II 450MHz or faster processor (or equivalent)

128MB of RAM

Operating systems and browsers

Flash Player 9 is supported on the following minimum operating systems and

browsers:

Windows Platform Browser

Windows 98 Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later

I uninstalled ver.9 and installed ver.8.something. It seems to be working

so far under very limited testing.

It involves removing

What do you have against Flash Player? I follow sports and the score

updates FP provides arehelpful.

You actually have to download the Flash Player package to find out this

info. Not an insignificant download or downloads to find the appropriate

one, especially if you have dialup(I don't).

Re: black icons

It's one thing for the manufacturer to state that the new release is

supported in your version of the OS - it's another for it to actually work

correctly. Often, testing with older versions of the operating system is

very brief.

Hope that was the solution.
