I think I have an unusual problem, because so far nobody has been able to help me.

As I am working on the computer the monitor will shut down this happens at least once sometimes twice a day. The lights on the unit will remain on when I try to reboot the unit will not turn off so I have to unplug the computer and then reboot. Occasionally , the monitor will come back by continuously pushing the on off button on the monitor or repeatedly pushing the enter and mouse key then the cpu will reboot itself.Strange!

This power saving mode shut down is a pain when you are online. I have tried many of the standard setting to clear up this problem but none seem to work.

Things I have done myself, changed monitor same thing happens, had the unit diagnosed and cleaned did not help. I wish I could be more help but I am not very computer literate.

The problem is not with my computer with my wife's and she is driving me crazy . please help . we are retired , and the most fun . we have is played with each other on the computer.

The computer is running Windox XP Home version and is about 6 years old. Can you help?????

Thanks for your time and advice.

Hello Bill

Welcome to FPCH

This sounds like a knackered PSU to me as you say you have had it cleaned so the CPU heatsink can't be overheating.

6 years is getting long in the tooth for a PC and the hard drive will be on it's last legs too mate.

I don't wish to replace his unit unless I absolutely have to.knackered psu. Can you explain more about this, is there anyway , I can check this out on the computer. Also , I have one other problem he may or may not have anything to do with this. Every now and then well my wife and I are playing games on pogo a dialog box comes up and it says do not adjust your clock . I appreciate your help and your time so much . thank you

I hope of doing this right, just learning how to get around here. Nothing more to say , a dialog box comes up and says do not adjust your clock will playing the game. Also , from time to time the clock itself has to be adjusted because the Time is wrong. This does not affect the operation of the computer in anyway

If you need to adjust your time every so often Bill you need to obtain a new motherboard battery.

Bill is the dialog box come from windows or the POGO site.

Pogo is an on line game site and plays in real time. It may set its own clock to a time zone. Say eastern standard time and therefore warns you not to set your clock to match its own. Does Pogo display time on the site?

Do I have a software conflict

Hope you can help, computer runs great but it shuts down the monitor on its own once a day, sometimes every other day. I changed monitors and the computer shut down new monitor. The CPU dosen't go off, and has to be hard booted by turning it off or at times will reboots by continuously pressing the keyboard or the monitor key. I had "AVG free" which shut down on me and gave me error messages, This is about the same time my computer starting acting funny. I had the unit cleaned and inspected and found no hardware problm. I also lost my printing ability, and cona not install it again so I had to removed the printer from my computer.

How do you determine if the software is are conflict or corrupt? And, above all how do you fix it? I am not computer literate . so if you need more information and aske

Hi Bill Welcome Back!

Before we get into this in the dark, you had a problem the other day that was left hanging.

I have no idea what, if anything, you may have done to affect the system.

Do you still have the same problems in addition to this new one? You must have done something if as you say the "computer runs great".

Let us know and we will be glad to help out.

The same problem with the monitor periodically shutting down . First I was told computer needed cleaning . so I had a clean and diagnose everything was OK. The people who clean my machine then suggested it's probably a software conflict and suggested I reinstall Windows. While I don't have the windows disk for that machine anymore and I can't afford to buy tham. I was hoping you could tell me if there is a way to manually fix a conflict. Also , I was told it might be the video card . I would appreciate your advice

I have a less annoying problem with the clock, when my wife and I are playing games a dialog box comes up and tells us not to adjust the clock.

At the exact same time my monitor started shutting down we had the problem with avg so I deleted the program. We also had an error message from our printer program so I deleted that everything else runs OK. I'm not sure of all this ties together I'm just giving you all the information I can.

Hi Bill,

So I guess it isn't actually "running great." :)

I think maybe it is best that you give us a run down of all of your issues so we can see if they are at all inter-related.

I may already have mentioned elsewhere that you can probably ignore the clock warning while on POGO. It probably relates to your time not being in sinc with theirs (time zone etc.) and they are, I believe, a real time games site. Do you get this warning at any other time?

Lets just get a handle on all your current issues and maybe they can be tied together and solved.

This whole thing started one day when my wife turned On her computer. She got a message her computer was at risk She lost her avg, at the same time the printer started acting up and would not respond and the Monitor started shutting down once or twice a day. When the monitor shuts down the light on the unit are still on but it will not reboot so we would unplug the unit and then reboot, sometime the monitor would go back on if you press the monitor button are continuously press a key keyboard keys. Do not know if any of this is related.

Things I have done, had the computer clean and diagnosed everything is OK, deleted avg and install McAfee. Sorry . that's all I know

Again I have to reiterate what I said in post number 2 as I consider the power supply to be failing and therefore not supplying the correct voltages to the rest of the board.

You could attempt to install a new psu but with being 6 years old something else may start to fail and in the end you could end up spending more money on new parts and, if your unsure how to fit them, labour costs.

What do you think of this suggestion?

Get back to us on this and we will talk further.

I will continue to use the computer as it is, I will check on the prices of the psu and if the prices reasonable will consider doing that. Even though I do not know much about computers for some reason logic tells me that the avg calls sometime of conflict in the software but I have no way of finding this out, so I will go with the experts. I want to thank you very much for your time in the trouble and if anything new comes up on this kind of problem please let me know
