Guest hepme Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 I have a home network with file sharing. Of course, I have misplaced the password for the shared files on a computer running Windows Me. How can I reset or, better still, do away with the password when I do not have the old one?
Guest Mike M Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Re: lost password Try booting up the Win Me PC, hitting cancel at the logon prompt and then look for and rename the file [username]^.PWL in the Windows folder. Reboot and when asked for a password enter none and click enter (do not hit cancel or escape) and you should now no longer be asked for a password when logging on to the Win Me box. If a password is required to access the shared files from another PC, then return to the Win Me PC and set one to suit your needs. -- Mike Maltby mike.maltby@gmail.com hepme <hepme@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > I have a home network with file sharing. Guest Mike M Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Re: lost password That should have been [uSERNAME].PWL -- Mike Maltby mike.maltby@gmail.com Mike M <No_Spam@Corned_Beef.Only> wrote: > Try booting up the Win Me PC, hitting cancel at the logon prompt and > then look for and rename the file [username]^.PWL in the Windows > folder. On the Windows Me computer, un-share the folder containing the shared files. You don't have to know the password to un-share it. Then re-share the folder with the desired settings. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. Guest hepme Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Re: lost password Thanks to Mike and Steve for their responses. Steve's sounded simplest, so I tired it and had success. Again, thanks to both of you.
