lost password

I have a home network with file sharing. Of course, I have misplaced the

password for the shared files on a computer running Windows Me. How can I

reset or, better still, do away with the password when I do not have the old

one?

Re: lost password

Try booting up the Win Me PC, hitting cancel at the logon prompt and then

look for and rename the file [username]^.PWL in the Windows folder.

Reboot and when asked for a password enter none and click enter (do not

hit cancel or escape) and you should now no longer be asked for a password

when logging on to the Win Me box. If a password is required to access

the shared files from another PC, then return to the Win Me PC and set one

to suit your needs.

On the Windows Me computer, un-share the folder containing the shared

files. You don't have to know the password to un-share it.

Then re-share the folder with the desired settings.

Thanks to Mike and Steve for their responses. Steve's sounded simplest, so I

tired it and had success. Again, thanks to both of you.
