ok i am having a problem, and am not sure of the cause. i just moved house where they have Virgin broadband (i think either 2mb or 10mb) and we are sharing between 4 people.

sometimes the internet will just slow down (as if i have gone over the bandwidth download limit) but not all sites will load slowly. google will take about 30seconds to load. facebook about 6seconds. i can sometimes sign on msn messenger but there is huge lag between my msgs being sent (around 1minute normally but up to 10minutes at one point)

i did the CMD then ping 'www.google.com' and i got 100% loss of packets and it just timed out all 4 times. even when i tried with facebook the same thing happened.

this has been going on the past two days now...and its usually in the evening.

could it be just that 4 people are using the internet...or is there another problem??

i am running vista and kaspersky internet suite is my AV.

Thanks, Fraser

Hi,

A few of things I would suggest...

1. Try the internet with just one person on. Switch all other machine off and see if the connection quality improves.

2. Plug one of your computers directly into the router and do not use WiFi. Again, switch off all other machines and see if the connection quality improves.

3. If you still have problems with the above two, phone Virgin Media (Technical Support: 0845 454 1111 or 151 from a Virgin Media phone line).

They are quite good about testing the line and modem etc. If all appears fine at their end then I would suggest it would be a bandwidth issue. I.e, someone else in your house is using the internet heavily at the same time as you...

4. Are your house mates have the same problem or is it just on your machine?

5. Finally, I know Virgin Media have been having problems in the North West recently. It will be worth a Free Phone Call to their service status help line (Automated recordings) to see if your area has any problems. Their phone number is: 0800 561 0061

Hope this helps,

Mike

Also check that you have some kind of encryption - WEP etc
