I am reluctant to run the cleaner (for applications) until I know what all these KB log files relate to. The earlier version of CC did not pick these files. Do you know what these log files are and is it safe to remove them (since in the application cleaning mode there is no option to back them up)? Thanks, Richard

Guest Mike M Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Re: Crap Cleaner Update Let me re-word that and hopefully this time make more sense. The KB log files are used IF the hotfix or patch with the same number did not install correctly as they should contain information allowing the user to establish the cause of the problem including error codes, etc. -- Mike Maltby mike.maltby@gmail.com Mike M <No_Spam@Corned_Beef.Only> wrote: > The KB*.log files are the log files created when installing the hotfix > with that KB number. The built in clean up of XP does not do a thorough clean up, neither does crap cleaner so I also use SystemSuite5 to clean up what crap cleaner and XP haven't found. Again, I have used it on dozens of computers with no adverse affects. Guest KB Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Re: Crap Cleaner Update No, the native XP cleanup tool doesn't remove everything, but IMHO, it's good enough. No, I don't read Urban Legends nor do I recommend others do so. Now, to answer your question with a question, when you run CCleaner, which boxes do you check in the Applications as well as Windows tabs? Do you leave them all checked? Having run the tool and directed others to use it with specific settings, I'm curious which you've used. The registry cleaner has caused problems, in my experience, often too late as users fail to save a backup of what's removed. I strongly dislike XP registry cleaners (they're not needed) and recommend that others avoid them especially if they don't create a backup. I just don't like the risk involved along with the need to specifically direct users to not install the yahoo toolbar with it, and the need to configure it properly. If you're happy with using it with no adjustments to the defaults, so be it. I've got no qualms with your choices. Best of Luck! Disk cleanup will calculate the free space on your computer, which may take a few minutes. d.. After the calculation is complete, confirm that only the following checkboxes are checked: Temporary Internet Files Recycle Bin Temporary Files e.. Click OK and Yes when prompted to delete files. Disk cleanup will delete the files and close automatically when finished. Defrag the drive for XP Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter. Have it defragment your local disk. As others have had issues with CCleaner, this is the best way to clean one's system and it doesn't involve installing third party software that pushes the Yahoo Toolbar and includes tools such as a registry cleaner that can seriously harm one's system, IMHO.
Guest Heather Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Re: Crap Cleaner Update Ah, thank you. I will learn how to do that damn quoting yet. PA showed me how many moons ago, but I forgot it. (G) Perhaps I shall come over and see what you all are up to. Night.....Heather "KB" <kbspammer@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:e6kPH$WBIHA.2268@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... <ROFL> Guess it's a gift for me as I can't remember what I had for lunch. ;) Don't let the bb code intimidate you => http://www.phpbb.com/community/faq.php?mode=bbcode And of course, should you need help I'm sure you've enough high powered friends to work things out, myself included. Best of Luck, Heather. :) "Heather" <figgyd@nospam.invalid> wrote in message news:O0Y2NwWBIHA.4836@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... Damn.....of course!! Haven't used WinME for a couple of years and shoot.....I am lucky if I remember stuff from last week, LOL!! Yep, checked and saw you were still in the top 10 Forum members. Chatted with PA for a time or two but hate......HATE.....that quoting stuff. I mess it up continually, grin. HF "KB" wrote in message news:%23rIzZhVBIHA.3780@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... It was ScanDisk and may need to be run in safe mode as well. I've seen many proggies that have been recommended to run instead of the native one, but haven't found them effective on my system. YMMV, of course. Yep, still hanging around in the forum. :) "Heather" <figgyd@nospam.invalid> wrote in message news:OGRk6OyAIHA.1168@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... Most of us run XP on here, but it is our *home away from home*.....we do get the occasional WinME user, but Harry is the only one using it to my knowledge. You forgot that other thingie with WinME, the one that escapes me as well. First you did *blank*, then you defragged. Sigh.....the memory is the first thing to go!! You still hanging out in the unnamed Forum?? (G) "KB" <kbspammer@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:eWqHNvxAIHA.1204@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... You're most welcome, Heather. I'm certain to be flogged for posting XP cleanup instructions in a ME newsgroup, but knowing that you're running XP and watching the thread I felt obligated. ;) Hmm, closing eyes and going from cranial memory for a WinME system.... For WinME: Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools will take one to Disk Defragmenter (which might not successfully complete (hangs during the process) in Normal Mode and may need to be run in Safe Mode) and Disk Cleanup. Best of Luck! "Heather" <figgyd@nospam.invalid> wrote in message news:%23Jta7VwAIHA.2004@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... Why, thank you, KB......that is EXACTLY the routine I follow every couple of days. Plus I go into Windows Explorer every night and clean out the TEMP folder, the Firefox one and also the Java one because it builds up fast. As I said, I do NOT trust Crap Cleaner and while there is some basis in fact (on reading what it does and how), it is also what I call a "gut hunch" and I follow those more than anything else. I also put cookies in the don't remove pane that I don't want removed. I always back up any registry issues that I remove. In addition to CCleaner, I use SystemSuite5's (formerly Ontrack) registry fixer and only remove the ones that SystemSuite5 recommends. SystemSuite does its own backup without user intervention. After an install of XP SP2 and Office 2000, I literally remove HUNDREDS of registry entries. I also use its registry defrag. Note, I only use these two apps right after a reboot. I have never, ever, had a problem due to using these two apps and it does speed up the computer, regardless of the false information out there that XP's registry should be just left alone.
