Freeware and/or Paid Software Model

Recommended Posts

I wanted to get people's feedback on which model they prefer and why do they

prefer the model. I prefer actually paying for software then using too much

software that is supported by ads especially because of the problems with

adware in this day and age. Please respond with comments to this post about

if you prefer the pay for software model or the software model that is "free"

and supported by ads as well as having the chance to mess with your computer.

You can see my bias here but I would like feedback from everyone if they get

a chance. Please try and use thoughtful comments and don't just rant and

rave as I have been guilty of in the past in this newsgroup if you can avoid

it. Thank you and have a great new week.

Better repost saying more clearly what you mean.

You are likely to find answers from people who play games

on PCs differ from those who never play games, people who

earn their living with PCs differ from those whose use is

unpaid, and so on.

E.g. for writing (a common function) most people use either

WordPerfect or MS Word although they never use most of

the features of this office software (designed for bulk production

of brochures etc.) I prefer instead a text editor with separate

formatting functions (built on emacs). The difference is

fundamental but has nothing to do with the categories of

freeware/patented software etc.

I have a lot of freeware and some shareware which I rarely use

and I have seen MAYBE one opening screen of an upgrade offer in

a few of them. So you must be using the wrong kind of

free/shareware, the kind that also installs all sorts of

"interesting" things in your machine.

When I use something that will run indefinitely in free or share

mode ALL the time and consider it indispensable, I pay for it,

sometimes even when it's completely optional.

I have bought some software not available as share of free but

not much. There is almost always a free/share option, often much

better.

And if it's a program that costs $300 and I need to use it ONCE,

I get a crack.

Decent software companies make their software free for home non-

profit use, as it all should be.

What programs do you use and like, thanatoid. Thanks in advance for your

response. Have a great week.

Thank you for your thoughts Don and Canadians do rule and are so cool. My

brother in law James is originally from British Columbia in Canada I think

and I know it is Canada and he is an awesome guy. <I know run on sentence --

I listed my "core programs" in my "t's computer is ten years

old" post. I probably have nearly a hundred other

programs/utilities which are more or less useful, if only once

every 3 years. But I am not going to list them all. That would

be just silly. If you are interested in what I think (FW*t*W) is

a good program for something, be more specific and I'd be happy

to recommend something.

Thanks, I will let you know in the future after I get my motherboard back

from ASUS because it is being repaired due to a power surge that fried the

Marvell Ethernet Port and potentially other stuff also. The CMOS battery is

also being replaced.

There may be more here than Dan assumed, chiefly:

1. Replacing a CMOS battery is or ought to be no more

difficult than replacing the battery of a flashlight. Because

the (disc-shaped) CMOS battery lies parallel with the surface

of a motherboard it may in many configurations be covered

by a device card (so that the card must be removed before

the battery cover can be unlatched) but once that has been

done replacement is easy.

2. In order to restore a Win98 PC, this user prefers to pay

for factory repair of a MB rather than buy whatever is in

the stores (presumably only MBs designed for XP or Vista.)

Where I live, stores that handle upgrades usually sell

"obsolete" Pentium 3 and Pentium 4 PCs for $200 or less,

as at http://www.fedacom.com/MainPage/MainPage.htm

Don, this motherboard recently sold on Ebay for over $200 and a second one

later on sold for well over $100 and so I am very happy with my decision.

Thanks for your input, anyway.

Re: Freeware and/or Paid Software Model

Please do not take offense Don Phillipson from Canada but do you build your

own computers and having help is allowed. My friend Raymond from Tucson,

Arizona helped me to upgrade my Falcon Northwest Mach 5 computer with a new

motherboard from ASUS, 2 hard drives from Western Digital, a new Intel 2.4

Ghz. CPU, etc. In addition, I now have my friend Jeff in Albuquerque, New

Mexico who will help me with the upgrading of my current machine which has 98

Second Edition and XP Professional. The biggest mistake that I recently made

was to install VPN without understanding what it does. I will now stay away

from it because apparently Cisco Networks VPN (Virtual Private Networking)

had some vulnerabilities and it seems to be only as strong as the weakest

link in the computer network of APS and so I will take Chris Quirke, MVP

advice and unistall it ASAP and realize that was what hurt my computer so

much, allowed someone to hack the system and made it so Windows 98 Second

Edition and XP Professional were confused. I also need this newsgroups help

to fully understand BING and what it does. Perhaps, Gary S. Terhune, MVP,

Chris Quirke, MVP and/or PCR could email me about it and have a good indepth

discussion about BING. Thanks in advance for your help and support. Please

see the following links to understand more in my discussion with Chris

Quirke, MVP on this area. (Note: I am not responsible if these links somehow

are messed up and bring you somewhere else so please use common sense and

precautions and copy and paste into a new tab or link and temporarily set

Internet Explorer settings to a strong security custom setting if you are

concerned about the web links but still want to see them)

Dan Weiser

currently APS educational assistant

plan to be 3rd to 5th grade elementary school teacher

no desire to be stuck behind an office desk all day

In addition, I don't know if Canada is lacking male elementary school

teachers but according to statistics the male elementary school teacher is at

a 40 year low in the U.S.A. and children need good male role models. I am

honored to have been chosen for this profession. Please be more careful with

your replies in the future and hopefully this does not dampen our on-line

relationship. BTW, my brother-in-law James is a Canadian so I highly honor

and respect our neighbor to the North and I hope that you will more highly

respect the U.S.A. in the future. Have a good week if you can manage it.

BTW, I am done with lying and I greatly apologize for lying in the past and

I will try and be more truthful in the future. I realize I will fall back

into lying again but I must restore the TRUST in this newsgroup and I am

willing to do what it takes to restore that trust especially with the cool,

awesome and caring Gary S. Terhune who I see as my teacher and myself as his

student who does stupid and terrible things sometimes with selfish ambition

and thoughts only for myself and not truly caring for my neighbor and loving

the higher power with my full being. I must try and pray for my enemies and

help thus that I can but I now realize I must first help myself and get my

life in order which is slowly but surely happening and I am now longer mad,

depressed and cynical because the thyroid hormone that I am taking is now

adjusted to the proper dose and I just need to have my blood levels

especially thyroid hormone checked every three months. I am also glad to be

on paid leave and staying with my parents in Santa Fe, NM for a while where I

am safe. My rental is currently in Albuquerque and I moved from Tucson,

Arizona in 2006 and it was because of my mom, Toni and her faitfulness that

she understood that I needed to get away from the terrible summer heat of

Tucson and move into a New Mexico which is the Land of Enchantment and has

the truly awesome Green Chile. BTW, Don, are you convinced yet that I know a

little about computers?
