What would cause Windows Update to stop working??

Some laptops I work with recently stopped updating. When I try to, I get "Windows update can not currently check for updates, because the service is not currently running , try restarting your computer". I am trying to figure out why this would happen.

The only recent changes done to them were the 18 or so updates from a week or so ago and nothing else. So what I am basically asking is, what would be causes for this to happen? Anyone have any ideas as to why?

Have since resolved issue
