Replace Defender with SE?

I would like to replace Windows Defender. Even with automatic updates, Defender still requires downloads when you shut down the pc. Sometimes these downloads "hang" causing a crash when I manually shut down the pc--the machine will run forever if I don't

shut it down. So I'm wondering, does Security Essentials present downloads like Defender, or not? If not, then maybe I would be better off with SE. Thanks.
