Guest gloriousglenn@hotmail.com Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Hi, I am trying to hook up a WinXP PC to my Server running Server 2003 but for some reason I cannot get it to access the server. I am trying to connect by going through System Properties - Computer Name - Network ID but for some reason it is not recognising the network. Apart from the cables not being attached (which they are!) what else could I be doing wrong for the network not being recognised? The error response is: The domain name "domian-name.com" might be a NetBIOS domain name. if this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS. No DNS servers configured for local system.2 (error code 0x0000267C DNS_ERROR_NO_DNS_SERVERS) I am very much a novice at all this and don't know where to start! Cheers Glenn
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Re: Adding an XP PC to Server 2003 Hello gloriousglenn@hotmail.com, Is the 2003 server a domain controller? Did you use ip addresses and subnet mask from the same range? Please post an ipconfig /all from both machines here. Guest gloriousglenn@hotmail.com Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Re: Adding an XP PC to Server 2003 Hi, Yes the 2003 server is a DC. You have to bare in mind I am not an IT guy and I have been thrown in the deep end with this (you really don't wanna know the full story!). Usually I can just plug a machine in and connect it to the network via - System Properties - Computer Name - Network ID. So when you ask about IP addresses and subnet mask ranges I have no idea!! Here are the ipconfig details for both machines: ipconfig/all - DC Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.3790] © Copyright 1985-2003 Microsoft Corp. Guest Meinolf Weber Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Re: Adding an XP PC to Server 2003 Hello gloriousglenn@hotmail.com, You have to configure the same ip range for the workstation like the server has. IP 192.168.10.20 SM 255.255.255.0 DNS 192.168.10.3 Why do you have a 128.x.x.x on the workstation? This is the reason that you can not connect to the server. For this to work at the client end, the PC must be configured to obtain ip addresses automatically. Try looking in control-panel--network connections and right click on the local area connection. Select properties and scroll down list to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Highlight TCP/IP and Select properties. If the selection is "Use the following ip address", make a note of all settings then swap selected option to "obtain ip address automatically". This MAY resolve the situation. You may also need to set the DNS selection on the same form to automatic. Phil
Guest gloriousglenn@hotmail.com Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Re: Adding an XP PC to Server 2003 Of course! How stupid of me! The PC had come from another office and was on a seperate network with the IP adresses manually assigned. As soon as I clicked the 'Obtain an IP address automatically' button and then went throught the process of trying to attach it to the network it worked first time. Simple...But without your help I would still be sat here pulling my hair out!! Many thanks Glenn
