windows 7 Microsoft Live Mail malfunction

Can anyone help identify my problem.When I use the quotation and apostrophy characters it is transposed to some illegible characters - for instance here I have typed quotation marks before and after the word quote i.e. “quote� I have typed the

apostrophe s after Jean i.e. Jean’s. Also when I go into the body of the e-mail and use the delete key to correct this problem it deletes the entire e-mail without putting it into the deleted folder or the recycle bin, I just lost a 4 page e-mail

when trying to fix a tiny error. I know, use document next time.
