Windows Update fails to install upades for Windows 7 64 bit

I have noticed that over the last month or so I have been unable to install my windows updates and have found that my BITS service is missing.

I have also just purchased a download of Windows 8 Pro but am having trouble getting it downloaded and think that maybe not having the latest windows 7 updates and missing BITS service could be the reason why

Please could someone help me.
