Do I need Windows auto updates?

Got a new HP laptop with windows 8. It's been running great.. very fast start up time. The last auto Windows update (yesterday) took about a half hour to install and restart. My laptop was very slow after that.. almost like dial up (I have Hi Speed wireless..

20mbps) I changed the settings and un-installed the latest update. That took just as long. But after that it has been running great again. But windows keeps giving me messages to change my settings back to keep up to date. Says it is very important to do this.

What happens if I don't? I like the speed I have now.. and it does everything I need as is. Advice?
