Newbe!! How do I fix windows media player error "Not installed correctly" issue?

I received an attachment in an email as a .wav file and I wanted to open it or listen to it. When I download as a zip and try to play it I get this error message telling me that the Windows Media player was not installed correctly and needs to be reinstalled.

This has been an ongoing issue for many years (4) now. When I go to windows help page they ask for a validation code and i don't know where it is. My Dell computer came with software pre-installed. What now? I'm running Windows 7 not sure what grade though.
