unable to connect to domain controller using "compmgmt.msc"

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am having a problem connecting from Domain Controller "A" to Domain

Controller "B" using the Computer Management console (compmgmt.msc). While

logged on as domain admin, I open compmgmt.msc and can view the local event

logs but cannot view the event logs on Domain Controller B. The odd thing is

that DC "A" and DC "B" can both use cpmpmgmt.msc to connect to DC "C" and

view the logs on that domain controller. but "A" and "B" cannot connect to

each other. Any advice on how to correct this situation would be greatly

appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: unable to connect to domain controller using "compmgmt.msc"

Brad,

Are they in different sites? It could be the MTU on the VPN, which breaks

many of the consoles. If you make a remote desktop connection and view the

server event log, can you do that? Is it just the console that is not

working?

Re: unable to connect to domain controller using "compmgmt.msc"

Anthony,

All three are in the same site. We only have one site in the domain. The two

that I am having trouble with (A & B) are in the same subnet.

Re: unable to connect to domain controller using "compmgmt.msc"

And is it just the event logs you can't see via the console? What about any

other console to that DC?

Can you see the event log in RDP using the same account to connect?

Re: unable to connect to domain controller using "compmgmt.msc"

Anthony, it is not just the event logs that I can't see via the console.

Although I can connect to "shares" and Sessions" under Shared Folders, I

cannot connect to the event logs nor to the device manager of the remote

server via the console. Some time ago I installed the update mentioned in

MS Security Advisory 935964; which closes a security issue in the DNS

interface, and also makes it impossie to use the DNS interface on one Domain

Controller to manage DNS on a remote domain controller. I'm wondering if that

update may be the casue of the connection issue?

Re: unable to connect to domain controller using "compmgmt.msc"

Hi Brad,

I am just trying to understand the problem a little better. So far I

understand that you can't access the event logs of DC B using the Computer

Management console on DC A.

Can you use other consoles connecting to DC B, such as ADUC (and connect to

DC B), or DHCP console?

Can you connect from C to B, or from any other workstation to B?

Do you have any errors in the event logs (when you view them locally or over

RDP)?

Re: unable to connect to domain controller using "compmgmt.msc"

I CAN connect with ADUC and with ADSS from A to B.

Regarding C, although I can connect to it from both A & B, I cannot go the

other direction - cannot connect to event logs on A or B from C.

I do have entries in the event logs - it is possible to view them all

locally. But I don't see anything there related to this problem.

If you connect instead to the IP address of the server, does it work?
