No Sound in Windows Vista

I was trying to watch a movie and could hear the music but the speech is so so quiet we can't hear what they are saying. We are running vista if that helps. Does anyone know how to fix this please? Also, we were able to watch movies through the pc to the tv when we attached an HDMI cable. The picture goes to the tv, but there is no sound and the pc has no visual. If anyone can help we would really appreciate it! Thanks!
