why won't media player rip my burned cd's

i previously burned my music onto cds when i had a computer with xp on it. it died and took all my music files with it. now i am trying to put my music back onto a new computer with windows 7. media player lets me rip store bought ones, but it wont do

squat with the burned cds. whats its problem. really hate windows 7 and this is just another thing to make me swap to a different operating system. how do i get my music back onto this horrid machine.
