Re: IE Crashes on this medical website?

Yes, I was able to open that web site. I'm on dial-up, and it took a few

minutes to load, but it finally did.

I disabled the Dr. as well... I guess when all else fails, it's the

obvious... The site itself, as it's really only happening there. Just hate

not being able to solve the problem.

Thanks Rick. We'll let this one, RIP

MSHTML.DLL

And I know, from notes in my SFCLog.txt, that one of the following put

it in here...

Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB918439)

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1

(KB916281)

Security Update for Windows 98 (KB918547)

Security Update for Windows 98 (KB917344)

Security Update for Windows Media Player 9 for Windows 98 and Windows ME

(KB917734)

Of those, my guess is it was KB916281 that did it!

I'd be more than willing to try (yet another) version of that mshtml.dll

file (like your newer version 6.00.2800.1555), but I haven't been able to

find it yet on the net. I have tried one or two others, and still have

issues.

I see that glee eventually crashed, & he has my IE & MSHTML.dll

versions. I've even gone into the symptom checker now-- it's a tad slow,

but hasn't crashed me yet. This is my 2nd time at the site.

What shows up in the IE About box-- do you have Cumulative Security

Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB916281) there?

I think it would be best to go for that, instead of for a stray

MSHTML.dll. HOWEVER, here is an old post of mine that has other

alternatives, possibly first suggested by Dundat (G. Gedye)...

the following will give you version...1173, but, weirdly,

this fix came out earlier than v...1170.

816506 - The removeNode() Function in a Script Call May Cause an Access

Violation in Mshtml.dll:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=816506

Version 1173 of mshtml.dll may be downloaded directly from Microsoft at

this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=878c5cd5-0a58-40e8-a963-7496c71d1f40&DisplayLang=en

I don't know whether those URLs still work, & obviously those seem

ancient compared to my current v.1555.

Re: IE Crashes on this medical website?

Note the following post that I made last december.

I have been using the 6.00.2800.1586 version of Mshtml.dll ever since,

with no issues.

I spent about 5 minutes clicking around http://www.webmd.com and IE

didn't crash or mis-behave. The answer could very well be in

installing this entire hotfix, as described below.

--------------

Subject: Microsoft continues to support Windows 98 (was: ...)

Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2006 20:31:46 -0500

From: 98 Guy <98@Guy.com>

Newsgroups: microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion

For that particular bulletin, the update file for Win-2000 SP4 is

available here:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/3/2/43288b03-38c7-4610-9f77-0d988726ba54/IE6.0sp1-KB925454-Windows2000-x86-ENU.exe

If you have problems with that link, try this:

http://tinyurl.com/ycn965

Contained within that particular file, you will find the following

files:

File Name old version date new version

Cdfview.dll 6.00.2800.1612 12/07/04 6.0.2800.1896

browseui.dll 6.00.2800.1692 6/17/05 6.00.2800.1896

I am listing the updated DLL files along with the version and file

date I currently have and the new version being provided by

Meekro$oft.

The last 5 files must be replaced under DOS (ie they can't be replaced

while windows is running).

I have replaced the above DLL's and have been able to run IE6 on my

Win-98se system and haven't seen any problems.

Some may want to un-register the old DLL's and then register the new

versions. I simply renamed the old files and copied the new ones to

my Win-98\system directory (that's where they all normally reside).

Well, I'm now using version 1274 of mshtml, and it still happens.

And I also got it to crash with versions 1170, and I believe 1106.

Interestingly enough, one time, and only one time, it didn't crash (when I

first tested 1170), but then it did again later on. So I'm back with the

newer 1274, (although its not as new as your 1555, which I should probably

look for - and test). The highest one I've found so far is 1274, but I

may not have searched enough.

Mistakenly, I went there again. Certainly a case of "too much information"

(which even I don't want to know about. *ggg*

Anyway, I malingered about, clicking and searching (search probably needs

Active Scripting to work) and no problems. Then went back to the main WebMD

home page by clearing address bar of sub-domains. It crashed. Error Message

is:

Aha, another mshtml.dll related crash - thanks for checking.

|

| Well, I'm now using version 1274 of mshtml, and it still happens.

|

| And I also got it to crash with versions 1170, and I believe 1106.

|

| Interestingly enough, one time, and only one time, it didn't crash

| back with the newer 1274, (although its not as new as your 1555,

| which I should probably look for - and test). The highest one I've

| found so far is 1274, but I may not have searched enough.

Well, that's a 2,702,848 byte file, & I'm sure the number of my

assassins would treble were I to attach it. So...

I am showing "Macromedia Flash Player 8" listed in Add/Remove Programs.

What do you see there, or in "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files"?

Because the site does involve animations, I can think Macromedia has

something to do with it. It is a site involving tons of TIFs of various

file types too.

Also, what are your settings at... "Internet Options, Security tab,

Internet". I am set to Medium there. And at the "Advanced tab,

Multimedia section", all are checked except the first item (which is the

only "don't").

I still haven't crashed there, even replicating Roxana's reported

activity. HOWEVER, the site did slow to a crawl, until it was closed &

re-opened! NOW, it is back to modicum-slow! That site really does give

TIFs a workout, Colorado!

Version 9. I'm ahead of ya. And Version 10 of Shockwave.

> Because the site does involve animations, I can think Macromedia has

Maybe, but I seem to be pretty up to date with both Flash and Shockwave.

Medium Low, for less nags.

> And at the "Advanced tab,

All are checked except: "Don't display online content in the media bar",

"Enable Automatic Image Resizing" (I didn't like that one as I recall),

"Enable Image Toolbar", and "Show Image download placeholders", all of which

shouldn't matter here.

But like I say, it did load up ok one time, which seems to suggest it's not

in there, anyways.

Re: IE Crashes on this medical website?

I hope this poster is the true and real 98 Guy since the post is not filled

with hatred like previous ones. I hate identity theft because it has

happened to me twice now and first in a home break in --- in Tucson Arizona

with the theft of my social security card, place trashed, computers tried to

be accessed -- BIOS password stopped mine from being accessed and now in 2007

with the hacking of my computer because I was stupid and did not follow

proper VPN security protocals. Please email me if you want further details

Just remove the space --- BTW, I will only answer emails from people who I

recognize so if I don't know you don't even bother emailing and if you do

into the trash it goes for all you spammers out there --- <grins>

MEB, was your previous arguments with the false 98 Guy? I did contact

Microsoft and they said they would contact the proper authorities and it

looks like they did because the Ethernet BAD Posts are fortunately and

thanfully removed.

Well MEB?

You want to answer that?

I had a brief look at the MS technet interface to this newsgroup.

Horrible. Absolutely horrible.

I can't believe how many of you people use that as a way to read and

post to this or any other MS newsgroup.

That's interesting!

Like others, I'm getting the same crash. And like others, I also have

the older version of MSHTML.DLL (6.00.2800.1555).

Before I click on the link above, I need to know what potential problems

exist. After all, I'm not running Windows 2000!

Also, I see that there are at least two newer versions of MSHTML.DLL:

6.0.2800.1586 (mentioned above)

6.00.2800.1598 (mentioned by lb in another post)

So where can one find 1598?

| All are checked except: "Don't display online content in the media

| recall), "Enable Image Toolbar", and "Show Image download

| placeholders", all of which shouldn't matter here.

I tend to agree those shouldn't matter. What about...?...

In the Browsing section, I am checked for all, EXCEPT...

(a) Automatically check for IE updates.

(b) Display a notification about every script error.

© Enable Install On Demand (IE).

(d) Enable Install On Demand (Other).

(e) Force offscreen compositing even under Terminal Server (requires

restart).

(f) Show friendly URLs.

(g) Use Passive FTP (for firewall & DSL modem compatibility).

| But like I say, it did load up ok one time, which seems to suggest

| it's not in there, anyways.

Maybe. Have you tried the "normal" fixes, such as emptying TIFs &...

(1) "START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool"

It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows. IE & E

are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an over-install of IE is

indicated.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177

Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool

(2) Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an

internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If

you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step ©.

(a) Turn off interfering programs. Use http://www.pcmag.com/ 's

"StartupCop" or "EndItAll2". Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".

Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General tab &

disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking

"Load Startup...". Reboot.

(b) Perhaps, if you haven't got EndItAll2, then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end

task all but Explorer & Systray. If this goes badly, start again from

top, & skip it next time.

© "START, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe". Click it in the Find window.

NOTE: If you are IE5, then it's "IE5Setup.exe". If there are more

than one (I have two each), click the one in "C:\WINDOWS\Windows

Update Setup Files" or "C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable.

(d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all

items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a). Reboot.

(e) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers

criticals.

I'll answer in this fashion and leave that to your own decision:

From just the above and a search through Google, we could easily follow

these back to the potential posting services/newsgroups that this 98 Guy

entity uses/frequents. We could also produce enquiries to the proper parties

to track this party to their individual identity, and/or garner other

information using various public sources and/or resources and programs.

Should we be associated with an enforcement agency [or an entity such as

Microsoft] perhaps tracking illegal distribution of software, music or

otherwise; from the monitoring of this party's activities via their ISP,

which could be effected in any nation presently under United Nations

agreements and which authorizes international authorities to use whatever

deemed necessary [with minor restrictions]: packet monitoring and sniffing

activities, email monitoring, and other aspects [progs or activities like:

Carnivore(1), DIRT(2), and other], can be used to collect

information/evidence necessary for potential prosecution. Moreover, this

would also provide information concerning that party's usage of activities

such as torrents, potential terrorist activities [a general excuse to

monitor and broadly defined], or other matters.

All member nations of the U.N. have these minimal agreements as part of

their acceptance. Some nations inflict even more restrictive activities

within. AND the suspect can NOT be informed of such activities by the ISP

under International enforcement Laws duing such monitoring [check the Laws

erected].

In addition, many nations have agreements among themselves regarding

software, music, and other aspects which also come under consideration.

------

If you personally wish to negate further abilities to *supposedly* use this

98 Guy entity in *false ID* then you could post, on your own, exactly who

you are and other information, and stop using the Aioe service.

However, as a registered Peoples' Counsel, I would not presently counsel in

that direction, as you apparently have engaged in illegal activity and

openly admitted such here and elsewhere [in other forums and newsgroups]. Of

course, along those same lines, if that party was supposedly not you, then

you posting your information voluntarily could supply reasonable doubt,

though there may be evidence to the contrary. As I have previously posted,

the Internet IS a network with starting and ending addresses contained

within EVERY packet. Any use leaves those traces.

Should it be deemed necessary or become necessary, I would further counsel

using a good attorney [as may be named in other nations] versed in these

types of defenses [good luck with that].

| > I did contact Microsoft and they said they would contact

|

| Horrible. Absolutely horrible.

|

| I can't believe how many of you people use that as a way to read and

| post to this or any other MS newsgroup.

I would agree, direct posting via forum interfaces is generally a bad idea

anyway, though sometimes that is the only way; or at times, when one doesn't

want to *join* a news service merely to post in that newsgroup/forum once or

twice as many require an actual traceable [directly to you] email address to

join/post [to protect themselves from potential legal issues] via email...

Then again, those who have *nothing to hide* generally have no need to use

anonymous re-mailers, filtering provides most of what they need; OTOH, there

are those who lend their actual identity to the post to perhaps provide the

background necessary or to ensure that identity is not used by others ...

Ah MEB. I should know more than to ask a simple question.

Yes. So?

> We could also produce enquiries to the proper parties to track

> this party to their individual identity,

Um, no you couldn't. You have no ability or right or legal recourse

to force AIOE to divulge my posting IP and then to force my ISP to

divulge my billing identity.

You nor any other reader of my usenet posts have no evidence or

material which you can show to any "authority" that would motivate

them to the degree necessary to seek court orders to obtain the

information.

> Should we be associated with an enforcement agency [or an

Should you be such an agency, you would not be reading hearsay on

usenet, but would be monitoring torrents and collecting direct

evidence.

MEB - I saw you at the Al Qaeda mixer last night. I didn't want to

| Yes. So?

|

| Um, no you couldn't. You have no ability or right or legal recourse

| to force AIOE to divulge my posting IP and then to force my ISP to

| divulge my billing identity.

|

| You nor any other reader of my usenet posts have no evidence or

Well those aren't the only tracks or ways to access information, but what

do I care... we've already had technical, and legal discussions, ignore the

world and what has occurred, that is your um, right ...

| usenet, but would be monitoring torrents and collecting direct

| evidence.

Hey you're the one who answered Dan, not me ....

Aw, you said you wouldn't tell. darn... guess I'll have to inform them of

the breach, likely they won't appreciate one of their group even mentioning

such activities ..

RRRRREEAAALLy. Funny, so on what planet are you living?

I have an idea, why don't you tell me, er, the group, er, the world ...

Cute. So what's your issue? If you noted, which apparently you didn't, I

posted the newest versions of files you purported as installable. Those

files were updated due to flaws and vulnerabilities... thought I'd try to

help you avoid making a fool of yourself,, but I see that was wasted effort

on my part .. you seem determined to do so.

Hmm, Windows 2000 is one of the few Microsoft operating systems that I have

only briefly used. Does it have any benefits that 98 Second Edition, ME, XP

Professional, XP Home, and Vista Home Premium lack?

How much of a lunatic are you?

Even Homer Simpson should know more about computers better then you.

Go back to thinking of useless nonsense to bore us with.
