Guest Rob Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 I just installed EMC's DiskExtender this weekend adn am getting many files that have named streams, which the system will not archive. I do not know much about the anmed streams, but have downloaded and ran the streams.exe form the sysinternals page and they do indeed have sstreams attached. This ustility also allows you to remove the streams, but i have no idea what the consequences are since I don't know how the streams got put in place in the first place. It seems to primarily be with graphic files and thumbs.db and .exe files. Can anyone "Educate" me as to the ups and downs of removing the streams from all the files? Thanks

LOL NTFS introduced streams to be compatible with these half pie computers... I think you have or had macos... Guest Rob Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Re: Named Streams No macs ever here, but that doesn't mean some of these items haven't been acquired from others with a mac. many of these are either advertising or presentation related, so there may have been input from multiple sources, not just local. Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Re: Named Streams strange, because streams are lost if files are copied over FAT or email. If it's PPT and no apple on the network you can get rid of these streams you can copy these files to FAT32, then back to NTFS to remove streams. -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com French blog: http://www.lotp.fr "Rob" <Rob@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:479A078B-20D4-435A-9300-E743FBA67D0B@microsoft.com... > No macs ever here, but that doesn't mean some of these items haven't been > acquired from others with a mac. many of these are either advertising or > presentation related, so there may have been input from multiple sources, > not > just local. > > > "Mathieu CHATEAU" wrote: > >> Do you have these funny computers that i can't remember the name...ha yes >> ! >> Macintosh ! Guest Rob Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Re: Named Streams I don't have a FAT32 system to write them to, but the streams.exe utility I mentioned does have that capability to remove them. And oddly enough, the ppt files have migrated with no problems. So they must have been created locally or at least from someone on a PC it sounds like. I will see if anyone else has a differing opinion about removing them, but it seems to me I should be able to do just that with no repercussions. Thanks for the info.
