How do I turn on Windows 8 Defender on a new Asus ultrabook

McAfee is installed and windows firewall and defender are both turned off. I tried control panel/windows defender but this confirms that defender is off and there is no option to make changes. I keep seeing messages from mcAfee telling me that the trial

period is over and I must pay to use their software, but I prefer to use defender because reports about its performance are good and it is a free package
