Lenovo T61, 15"4,XP Pro SP3, How can I get laptop to show on my TV,I only get XP startup & then both

I have connected a vga & audio lead to a converter imput, & then from the output HMDI lead to the TV HMDI, I tried Display properties & settings and the best I get is when I restart as instructed is the windows XP (black screen with logo) with the loading

bar under doing it's thing........this comes on the TV fine but then stops and goes black on both screens, I dont seem to get to the control alt del stage at all.........All help needed out there please......Thanking you, yours sincerely liam k
