computer crash and update of Microsoft Security Essentials

I downloaded the free version of Security Essentials from the Microsoft site 1 year ago. 2 days ago, while travelling, my computer crashed and I lost everything. I have been downloading all the updates and everything is back to normal, except I now have

an icon for Windows Defender.

I hear this is the replacement for Microsoft Essentials in windows 8, except I only have Vista.

 

Is this still free and is it legit. It showed up in my programs when I downloaded all my updates to bring it current from factory default due to the crash.

I have windows Vista 32bit.
