Email verifying problem.

Hi there I have a major problem with my new laptop. First things first I am running windows 8 and I set the laptop up in a gmail account and ever time I try to verify the email account I get an error message saying the service is down and it has been saying

this since Christmas day. Now is this because it is a gmail account? Must I need to use a hotmail account to set the laptop up? Please help.
