Problem with 0x801901F4 and confusing solution

Got myself a second hand Toshiba Satelite laptop this last week, previosly owned by a school so was cleaned of all their programs and info before being sold.

 

 

 

 

 

 

I thought it best update but upon doing so once the microsoft webpage has started scanning my computer it displays a message stating it couldnt complete the search... and in the right hand corner is the error code 0x801901F4.

 

 

 

 

 

 

After searching the internet i discoverd there were a few download tools which after downloading and using to scan the laptop found a varying number of problems... from 165 to 475 and of course they all wanted a certain amount of cash to fix.

 

 

 

 

 

 

So another search found different settings i could change in order to fix the problem so microsoft could fully check my laptop and update and install service packs (currently on service pack 2 windows xp) but all changes didnt work.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Just wondering what are my options to fix this problem, will buying and installing windows xp again or windows 8 fix the problem.
